Have a look at VT members' reviews of Palermo hotels/b&b etc here:

http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Italy/Sicilia/Palermo-146743/TravelGuide-Palermo.html

Also look at www.venere.com which lists almost all Italian hotels (and b&bs as well). It is reliable, with good mapping and honest reviews.

www.booking.com is also good (no b&bs), but venere has wider listings in Italy.

The VT reviews are from personal experience, of course. Hopefully other Vt-ers will see your post and offer their opinions soon.

I can thoroughly recommend the Hotel President. See my travel tip on my Palermo page. It's handily situated right at the port. Single tariff in May was 70Euro which included a great breakfast buffet. Rooms were air conditioned and a good size with generous sized bathroom (shower and bath tub). I would certainly go back there again.

Sicilian cuisine is so great!

by lichinga

Sicilian cuisine is so great, I feel embarassed oi try to resume my feelings. That will take a bit of time and some more effort. In the meantime, I'd like to report about a few restaurants I consider my favourite in Palermo:

1. MACCU - a tiny hiddem place, close to piazza Sturzo on the way to the harbour- I can't remember the name of the street right now, but I promise I'll complete the information, asap. Ask them if you came in the appropriate period for "spaghetti con i ricci", which is spaghetti accompanied by the very delicate taste of the pinky eggs of sea-urchins.

2. CAPRICCI di SICILIA - in piazza Sturzo, that is 100 metres from Politeama Theatre (central stop of the buses coming from thge Airport). Only Sicilian cuisine (but that was unuseful to mention, I wouldn't even think of giving you any advice with different peculiarities), good wines, kitchen is open until 11.30 pm, no music, no noise, clean and well decoarted. A pleasant place, with an unforgettable cuisine.

If you are in Monreale: 3. LA BOTTE - a scenic restaurant a few kilometres uphill from Monreale, good Sicilian cuisine, pleasant and peaceful place with a wonderful sightseeing over Palermo and Monreale and what used to be the 'Conca d'Oro', i.e. the 'golden cup', in the times when the orange trees filled the plain.

Cappella Palatina

by ruki

The famous French writer Guy de Maupassant defined it as “the most beautiful in the world, the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of by man”. It is easy to share his opinion. The Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel) contains a harmonious blend of opposing cultures, Byzantine, Norman, Arabic, and Sicilian, creating a truly amazing architectural and artistic result. Located in the Palazzo dei Normanni, the Cappella Palatina is home to some of the most beautiful mosaics in the world that depict famous scenes from the bible. The wooden ceiling styled into Arab-style stalactites and alveoli dating back to 1143 and the marble floor are just as wonderful.

Boisterous PALERMO

by zumodemango

Only one long weekend is not enought to know Palermo but at least was enought to discover this wonderful place full of life. Waiting to come back, i have only good memories. A seductive place of old origins that even today subsits the caracter of Arabs, Normans and Spanish governings.
