Palazzo Chiaramonte became the
Sicilian headquarters of the Inquisition,
known as the "Spanish Inquisition."
Here prisoners were interrogated, tortured,
and sometimes burned at the stake for
heresies both real and imagined. The
executions were often held in what is now
the park, Garibaldi Garde, in Piazza Marina.
