The Catacombs are 3-6CADChristian burial and worship places carved into the rock beneath what later was built as a church.There are subterranean chapels and crypts that hold the remains as well as various memento mori. The martyrdom site and Tomb of St. Marcian and various weird exhibits abound.. Of couse in such a sacred place no cameras were allowed. We had an English speaking guide to ourselves. Strangely again no literature or pictures were available. Above ground there were the ruins of a Norman church which was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake.
