Another place to linger over a glass of wine

The Piazza Archimede is another good place to unwind in one of the cafes. This is not a traffic free square, but it still has a kind of intimacy over it. In the middle of the square there is fountain that comes in handy on a hot day.
Duomo and Sea Side

Siracusa was pouring rain when I arrived. I was wading through 2 feet of water - at least! Then I planted myself under a car-port for a while. A young Siracusan woman, my age, rescued me from the pouring rain! What an adventure! She and her sister ended up helping me find a decent penzione.... Later I met their friends. The young Scicilians gathered in a piazza and just hung out, had a good time, talked, laughed.... there were probably about 20 people. I was overwhelmed! And, I thought it was pretty cool too! Siracusa has good things to see - like the Duomo which is a Greek Temple converted to Cathedral. There's some history for you!
While in Siracusa, I met some American students who were from Syracuse, New York. One night one of the students & I went out to a bar. We had met up with a couple of "natives" and hung out. After closing time we walked near the water front. We were stopped by some men who demanded to see our IDs. They were very intimidating. The Italian men we were with were very worried, I didn't really know what was going on. They took our IDs, and examined them very carefully under the street lamp. They also had a body guard-type of man with them. These people were in plain clothes. They were either undercover police or mafia. To this day I do not know. Anyway, they gave us our IDs back and said "bonna notte" and that was it. We all sighed in huge relief. My advice for travelling in Scicily: better to go with a buddy.
(I also went to Agrigento....but I can't post that becuase virtualtourist doesn't have an Agrigento or a Scicily title.)
