The engineering solution of a Greek theatre is simple: the whole construction is dug out in the solid rock. In case of Taormina, about 100000 cubic metres of stone had to be replaced - in other words, it's good to have slaves!The stage of the Taormina theatre is still used today: at the time of my visit posters all around Sicily announced the concert of Julio Iglesias in July 2007. Be quick - and maybe you'll still make it :)
