Taorimina, Sicily

by lindaburger

We are spending three days in Sicily, arriving in Catania by ferry at the end of June. Should we stay in Taormina or outside of it? Is anyone familiar with a town called "Mascalucia" which is south of Taormina? We do not want to drive so would like to pick somewhere central to stay that has its own charm and personality. My husband and I are traveling with our 18 year old daughter. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Taromina is a hill town. NO beach. If all you want to do is admire the views, shop, eat, and see Greek ruins then stay in Taromina. All walking town. The town of Giardini-Naxos is about 5km from Taromina and is known as one of the best beach towns in Sicily. It is the center of the Ionian Coast. Many Hotels and nightlife, and I think your 18 year old would like the beach area. Make sure if you stay in Giardini-Naxos, that your hotel is on the beach. There is a bus that runs from the town to the hilltop, Taromina. Taromina is the dreamscape beauty of Sicily.
Catania, where you are coming in by ferry, is centered for trips to Taromina and Siracusa. Both of these cities/towns are different from each other and both offer many sights.

Travel Tips for Taormina

Etna from Parco Duchi di...

Etna from Parco Duchi di Cesaro

This parc (Giardino Trevelyani) was near the hotel and I used to go through it when going to the center of Taormina. From there you can admire Etna and the surroundings towns cuddled by the sea!

This is the Convento di S. Domenico- church and convent. It has designs from 1374 (when it was started), sixteenth and eighteenth centuries!

Artists from all ages and nationalities come here, sit on one of the many benches and spend hours drawing this breathtaking scenery!

View over the Etna

A unique thing about Taormina is its great view towards the volcano Etna. The volcano is still active, so there is always some smoke coming from it. It is covered with snow until about April. In winter it is possible to ski up there! (Well, it was as the last eruption destroyed the ski lifts). in the Evening you can sometimes see the lava glowing!!

Teatro Greco

by Sjalen

If the weather would have been good, the misty surroundings to the left would have revealed the snow capped Etna not too far away in the distance. But instead, you can always look at people making fools of themselves in all major European languages, reciting something from Goethe's visit to Sicily on the stage :-)))

Alternatively, gaze out towards the Mediterranean. In decent weather, you can make out Calabria on the other side of the Messina strait.

Just some more to make another travelogue of...Here the city gate again.

Bay of Naxos.

Stairs, stairs....
