Taormina - join wlaking tour or explore on our own?

by cielomaca

What sites should we go to if we are doing our own walking tour? Trying to avoid paying extra for something we can do on our own. We will be in Toarmina for 1 day only as part of the cruise ship itinerary.

The Greek Theatre is a must, also the Villa Communale gardens. When I was last there, the cafe there had the best strawberry granita.

And stroll along the Corso Umberto to the Piazza IV Aprile.

Taormina is not large town, there are signs which you can follow to reach ex. Theatre or just walk the streets on your own or down to the Island with garden and (rather small and crowded) beach if you like. Really no need to take tour, except if you wish to get more explanations but you can as well read about that from (guide) book or tourist brochure.
You will immediately know where is the main pedestrian street by the way, it would be really hard to miss. The rest just requre some walking and exploring, and side streets are more quiet than main sites.

ALCANTARA

This scenic Alcantara Gorge is located on the Alcantara River north of Mount Etna near Taormina off Route 185.

This beautiful rock formation, composed of basalt, was created by volcanic activity.

...and by night

by mabu

In the evenings lots of artists come on the piazza to make portraits and cartoons of the tourists.
Of course the view over the sea is nice in the Evening too. And if the volcano Etna is active you can see the lava glow!
