Travel from Palermo to Vita, Trapani

by lawtonj

We are taking a cruise that will stop in Palermo for the day. We want to drive from Palermo where the ship docks to Vita, Trapani. How long would it take to drive and how easy and quickly could we rent a car for the day?

The drive from Palermo to Trapini would not be much of an ordeal, There are good roads that lead out of the city and down the coast to TP. I have rented cars many times in Sicily and it can be a challenge at times. I have not been back in a while and it could be different now. They usually require CDW insurance and that is expensive. Be very careful when excepting the car and note any and all damage. Make sure you only turn it in to an agent and you have them note the condition. If time permits drive on up the mountain road to Erice in Trapini for kicks. Quaint little town with quite a view. Hope this helps. Enjoy Sicily, I love it when I'm there. The people are great and the scenery is grand. This from a guy whose family was from Naples area.PS If you only have one day why not hire a car and driver. That way you won't miss your ship if you get lost. Navigating Palermo can be tough if you don't speak the language.

I'll second the advice to hire car and driver (or check on public transportation). We drive all over Europe including Italy and we found Palermo to have the worst drivers and worst directional signage of anyplace we've ever visited. As we drove through Palermo, we actually saw at least five accidents take place and were most grateful none involved us. There are lanes marked in the street but no one pays any attention to them. It's all very fluid and people merge into and out of disappearing traffic lanes.

On the bright side, you would have Autostrada from Palermo to Trapani (taking the cutoff toward Segesta and Trapani) and once outside Palermo, the driving is just fine.

However, returning to your ship, you would have to negotiate Palermo to the dock and you do not want to miss your ship! Perhaps someone will log on and give you public transportation advice, but if not, seriously consider the advice above to hire a car and driver. That way you can both enjoy the scenery. 8^)

Enjoy your trip. Sicily is magnificent.

I would agree with the other posters about hiring a car & driver. While I have rented a car in Sicily, the congestion in Palermo itself is just too hard to navigate, although it's a lovely city which I really like. The other roads in Sicily are just fine. By the way, at Trapani there is a cable car up to Erice (the hill-top charming town), so don't miss this ride and its tremendous views.
