How to get to Sorano?

by SandiM

Is there a public bus to this town and if so, where from? We can either approach from the north (Pienza Tuscany) or the South (Rome). The easiest solution preferred? We would rather not rent a car, if possible.

I can find two buses bus to Sorano. Timetable here:

http://www.ramamobilita.it/~linee_orari/orari/linee/40/40_asc.htm

or, if those do not work, scroll down the pdfs here:

http://www.ramamobilita.it/spip.php?rubrique63

until you get to either

'Castell'azzara Sorano Pitigliano' or 'Pitigliano Sorano Casone Pitigliano'

or if that does not work, go to http://www.ramamobilita.it/ and click on 'Linee e orari' then on 'Servizio extraurbano'.

You can get to Siena, Orbetello or Grosseto by train, but will then need an onward bus to Pitigliano (see links above).

Travel Tips for Sorano

Another great example of the southern Tuscan hill

by MrRandMcnally

"More Medevil than Renasance"

The renacance cities of nother Tuscany may get most of the play in the guide books but I think I perfered the cities that were older, clearly built as hitlop forts. Sorano and Pitigliano is a great examples of this while the wine towns, Montapluciano and Montalcino are a bit more renasance, Siena is Renesance with a touch of the old thrown in and Florence and Pisa completely break into the new style.

"I think I perfer the old to the new"

I don't know if this is the most common feeling but I liked the cosey, closed towns of the south, with their twisting roads and blind allys. A visit to Pisa and Florence are required on your trip but try to save a day for the southern towns.
