Bus from Siena to Castiglioncello.?

by elinbschmidt

Hi there! I'll be travelling with my daughter in Tuscany this June. I guess bus from Florence to Siena is ok, but how do we get from Siena to Castiglioncello, our next stay? I thought of hiring a car, but would be pleased not to.. If there is a bus-link between these two places; will it be possible to get off at Volterra (to stay there for some hours) and then get on a later bus towards the coast? Do we have to change buses somewhere in between?
I would be very grateful if someone could help me with these questions, and perhaps supply me with a link to the actual bus-company. :-)
Greetings from norwegians

Which Castiglioncello are you going to go?
the one close to Lucca or the close to Livorno?

Hi! Are there two places with the same name? Well, we're going to the one south of Livorno. :-)

ok.
you could also get a train from Siena to Castiglioncello with a change at Empoli or Montepescali
more infos, timetable and cost here

btw you can see or buy ticket with 60 days
timetable would be the same till end of September

Thank you so much for your answer! I will check out the possibility of going by train. It seems like quite an extra distance to go, compared to the possibility of following the road from Siena, via Volterra, straight westwards to the coast.. I just hoped for an opportunity to see Volterra "on the way" to the coast, and that will probably be possible if a bus-line passes.. :-)

I do not think bus would be faster then train and not because Tuscany is a little bit hilly... then I hard belive you should have to take lesser then two or three buses. Your risk is to spend your time to be waiting for buses.
If you want to see Volterra, you better take a car then an have a stop also at Monteriggioni, it's on the way.

I'm so grateful for your answer! :-) I think this helps me to decide what to do: I DO rent a car in Siena, and leave it at the airport in Pisa. Then we can visit both Monteriggioni and Volterra on our way to the coast. Once again: thank you so much for bothering! :-)

Leave Siena in the morning, Monteriggioni and the lunch at Colle Val Elsa, afeternoon at Volterra.
why are you dropping the car at Pisa's airport?
I thought you wanted to go to Castiglioncello....
Or you mean you keep the car until you'll leave from Pisa airport?
to have a car in Castiglioncello could be expensive, why not drop the car at Cecina? 15 km far from Castiglioncello?
you may go straight to your hotel in Castiglioncello, following morning after breakfast you go early to drop the car within 24 hours you picked up in Siena and back with a local bus or taxi.

from castiglioncello to pisa airport you could take the train, change at pisa centrale to pisa airport.

Thank you again, my friend, for helping me further. We're leaving Siena on a Monday and will spend two nights in Castiglioncello. Then we have one night in Pisa, because the plane leaves very early Thursday Morning.
I have reserved a car (with GPS - hehe..) from Hertz, Siena, and hope it will be quite simple to find the Hertz station by the airport in Pisa wednesday evening. What you suggest - to leave the car in Cecina - sounds like a good idea (and would have spared me some money), but it seems like Hertz don't have any rental there. But I really appreciate your interest! And your tip of a good place to eat in Montereggione. I will note it down. Thank you! :-) We are excited and really looking forward to this taste of Tuscany.
