Ortisei.... St. Ulrich.... Urtijëi
"The trilingual hamlet"
When do you know you're a nerd? When, at 15 and blissfully unaware of the fame that the Dolomites enjoy for hiking and skiing, you insist that you and your father drive north from Emilia-Romagna to Alto Adige so you can visit a region where people speak not only Italian and German, but also Ladin, the tiniest of the Romance languages. Ortisei (which I believe is called Urtijëi in Ladin) is the centre of the Ladin cultural movement and pretty interesting for those who take a shine to minority peoples in Europe and linguistics. It also has some spectacular mountain scenery and quaint village life. I managed to come away from it all with a few books on the development of Ladin and local authors and poets, as well as a sense of my very odd obsession with languages and travel.
