Wood Carving
by sandysmith
At the beginning of the 17th century Christian Trebinger, his brother Bartlmä, and Melchior Vinazer established a craft that is today inseparable from the name Val Gardena – wood carving. By the 18th century Val gardena was a major centre for such skills and today it is a modern industry. Many such crafted items can be found in selva as souvenirs or you could just watch a local craftsman ply his trade. Such skill is aslo evident on a hiking ttrail too.
Wanderlust and wonderful views
by Grimm
Selva di Val Gardena, or Wolkenstein as is it's German name, is situated at the top of Val Gardena. It is definitely not an out of the way place, but rather a quite well-visited place during later July, August and September. Not to forget during winter.
Then why should you stay in Val Gardena? Because if you like mountain hiking, but don't like sleeping in a rough albergo on the mountainside, Selva is the perfect starting point for numerous day hikes in the surrounding mountains. By lifts and by buses you can get to high cold mountains, lovely pastures where the cows and horses rule, natural parks (don't pick the flowers or the stones!). Or spend the day in the Langental. You can easily spend 1 or 2 weeks with a new hike every day. Also from Selva you have a view of the Sella massive and the Sassolungo mountain. Both up to 3000 m high. In summary with wanderlust, camera and binoculars you will definitely have a good time in Selva.
