Average temperature during August

by nona4

Hi !
I'm going to Selva di Val Gardena in 1 week time. Just wanted to know what's the average temperature at this time of year. I know people normally go there during winter time for skiing, but myself and some friends decided to enjoy a short summer break in the mountain site. What kind of interesting things to do there in August apart from hiking and sightseeing ? Does it get cold during night time ? Do I still need thick clothes with me ? Thanx ; )

Some warm and rainproof clothes are always recommended whe you go to mountain places. It is particularly important now. It is a strange summer, with lower temperatures than average.
Anyway, here is the address of a webpage on Selva di Val Gardena and the surrounding area, where you can find also weather forecasts: www.dolomiti.it/eng/zone/gardena/selva.htm

We were in Selva di Val Gardena 5 weeks ago, and it was HOT! It was windy up in the mountain in the early evening, but it was not a cold wind, and it was warm again when we hiked down to lower altitude. We spent 4 days in the 3 villages and I only changed to short-sleeved top once, the rest of the time, I wore spaghetti strap or sleeveless top.

Yes, in June and July there have been really hot days. I was in Switzerland for two weeks last month, but right now the clmate is cool even down here in the Po valley, so it must be rather cold up in the mountains.

That's really good to know. I hope it'll stay warm throughout August as well. Yes !!! Thank you!

Yes, bring something heavy, but dress in layers. Don't underestimate the sun as it's easy to get burned up there, so bring good protection if you plan on a lot of hiking.

Selva is wonderful, you'll love it there.

Travel Tips for Selva di Val Gardena

Ortisei

by sandysmith

Ortisei, at altitude of 1236m, is the largest village in the Val Gardena. The centre is a colourful pedestrian only area - a delight to wander around and enjoy the shops and cafes here before or after heading for the peaks of Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi which are easily accessible using the several lifts - including a wonderful old chair lift. The architecture was really neat and I loved the lace fretwork on this hotel right in the centre of Ortisei.

Vallunga Valley

by sandysmith

The Vallunga Valley in Selva is great for low level walks as well as tracks leading up to the Puez Odle park for more strenuous hikes.
The valley in the winter time has a cross-country ski trail too. Near to the entrance of the valley is the tiny St Silverster's chapel - seen in the pic - which is worth a peep inside as you pass.
