The poeple living in the valley reflect one of their traditions by carving small Sations of the Crossand placing them along the high level path above Selva.
I imagine the Lenten Season sees parishioners visiting these memorials in remembrance of the Passion and Death of Jesus.
This is an example of the landscape in the Dolomites area of northern Italy, bordering on Austria and the Alps. You will find the high green pastures and then the stark and bare mountain tops.
As you drive the area between Bolzano and points north and east from there you will come across dozens of ski lifts dropping into valleys and rising into the sky on the backs of the mountains.
As you go higher, so the valleys lay further below you. Watch out for that first step though. You can just see on the left side of the picture, yet another ski lift, they go over roads, over power lines and even over towns.
