Italian Alps - The Dolomites
by Martin_S.
Here we are in one of the small towns, take a look at the mountainous backdrop, that is some sight to see each day. It seems as if each and every one of the houses were built just yesterday, they looked "squeeky" clean and dressed up for the holiday. It was a pleasure just to drive through or walk the streets here.
An excellent woodcarving in St Ulrich/Ortisei.

A bus journey away, no more than 20 minutes to the west lies St Ulrich, bigger and more touristy and a pleasant place to visit.
I was impressed by the sculpture/wood carving in one of the squares in the small town. A simple subject yet carried out by the carver with great skill to show the effort needed to move the rock in the wheelbarrow.
St Ulrich itself is also built along the valley and on the south facing side of the mountain.
The road winds up and passes a church or two and one comes to a cable car and it is in operation. A great invitation to me to leave the shops and cafes behind and explore the mountain world above.
