Travel Tips for Trento

Palazzo della Regione, the architecture

by JLBG

The architecture of the Palazzo della Regione is especially striking once you are in the gallery. The main part of the building is corbelled and standing on huge pillars, some are looking like giant hands that bear the first level. Others look like elegant spools. This is the work of Adalberto Libera (1903-1963), a famous local architect that belonged to the avant-garde of modern architecture in Europe. It was built from 1954 to 1963.

The cathedral

by iandsmith

Trento Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di San Vigilio) is the most important religious edifice in Trento, northern Italy. Built over a pre-existing 6th century temple devoted to San Vigilio, patron saint of the city, its location aids in it being a standout edifice.
Bishop Federico Wanga commissioned the architect Adamo d'Arogno to construct the new Lombard-Romanesque church. Works continued for more than a hundred years, with the Gothic style becoming increasingly evident.
The façade has a large rose window including The Wheel of Fortune. Notable also are the lions supporting the columns of the narthex on the northern side and the twisting columns in the apsidal area.
The interior has a nave and two aisles with a transept. The latter has 14th century frescoes depicting the legend of St. Julian and the stone statue of the Madonna degli Annegati. The apse of the right transept houses the relics of the local martyrs Sisinius, Marturius and Alexander who died around 397 AD. In the right aisle is the Crucifix Chapel (1682), with a wooden crucifix at the feet of which were promulgated the issues of the Council of Trent, whose sessions were held in the church's presbytery.

Sala Filarmonica V. Gianferrari

by JLBG

Trento has so many buildings of historical importance that several of them are not listed in the documents (paper and web) that I have used. This nice building hosts the “Sala Filarmonica V. Gianferrari”. It must have been built at the turn of the century (19th) but I have no further information.

ITAS

by JLBG

ITAS stands for Istituto Trentino Alto Adige per Assicurazioni (Insurance company for the Trento and the Higher Adige regions), a mutual benefit insurance company founded in Trento in 1821 and the oldest insurance company in Italia.
However, if I wrote this tip, it was because I was impressed by the house where it has its seat, looking like some palace, with scallop shells on top of the windows of the first level. I do not have found any clue about this building.
