Albergo Excelsior: What did you expect?

With a name like that you'd be looking for something a little superior. You'd be disappointed.
Entering from the drifting snow outside into the warmth was the highlight. It sort of went downhill from there.
The reception desk was hardly worthy of the name and, when finally I got someone who could actually give me a key; the chain-smoking man I initially spoke to was of little help; I had to ascend the old wooden staircase since, like many European establishments, lifts were unheard of.
The room was a throwback to Australian accommodation circa 1955 where you got a room, a cupboard, a washbasin and not much else. The dingy tone of the place didn't help though it did have TV which, in this place, was a huge plus because reading by the dim and poorly positioned light wasn't a good option.

Unique Quality: The dining scenario was amazing. I arrived downstairs somewhat peckish and walked into the dining room. I was then hastily ushered out by a waiter who unequivocally said that no-one was allowed in till the food was served. I indicated what was wrong with just sitting at the table reading some literature but no, he was determined and forceful. I couldn't fathom the reasoning but he sent me to a room at the end of the corridor where the other guests waited. On my mother's grave I swear that it was less than a minute later when everyone was summoned to the dining room. To say that I was less than impressed was putting it mildly.
The mass-produced food, served by bow tied waiters who obviously aspired to 5 star gourmet restaurants, was average and palatable. The experience was unforgettable.
