How to get to Avis office from train station

by scarll

A friend and I will be arriving in Arezzo by train and are renting a car from Avis for further travel in Tuscany. I am unable to find directions to the Avis office, or information on the best way to get to it. Is it within walking distance of the train station, or will we need to get a taxi. Thanks!

1. go to www.avis.com and do Locations. Look for the location on Arezzo, Italy.
2. Note the address (at the top of the block, oddly enough): "Piazza Della Republica 1/A". drop the "/A" in favor of the "1" as this confuses some mapping software. ***Note*** if you are not an Italian speaker, you won't have noticed that "Repubblica" is misspelled (it's supposed to have two "b"s in standard Italian)
3. go to www.viamichelin.com (mapping website)
4. search on Arezzo, Italy, zoom in on the train icon. This is the train station in Arezzo.
5. Well, how 'bout that! The address of the train station is "Piazzale della Repubblica"! The car rental office is on a piazza next to the train station, which, if you think about it, is pretty normal in Italy (it's often within walking distance of a few hundred meters of the station, if not right next door).

Don't worry about "Piazzale" versus "Piazza"; either the mapping website or the Avis website has it wrong (you're usually not going to have both in the same town), and given that the Avis website misspelled "Repubblica", I'm betting on them ;-).

So, the net result is that the office is in front of the train station, off to one side, and if you can't see it, just ask somebody (especially someone who works at the station) or show them a piece of paper where you have written "Ufficio AVIS, Piazzale della Repubblica, 1/A", and they'll likely walk you outside and point it out to you...

Oh, in case someone doesn't know what AVIS is (it's "bird" in Latin, which could confuse someone who doesn't drive), write this on the paper:
"Ufficio AVIS
Autonoleggio
Piazzale della Repubblica, 1/A"

Autonoleggio being "car rental"...

Thanks for the great answers Bill. Very helpful! Also love the Michelin maps site, thank you!

The advice to specify "AVIS autonoleggio" is very good, because in Italy AVIS is also the name of the national association of blood donors, which campaigns a lot on tv and newspapers, so more people are likely to know it better than the car rental company.

Giostra del Saracino

The Saracen Joust is the town's equivelent to a medieval festival. Town's people dress up in medieval costumes while knights joust and race around the piazza's and town. The knights wear colors and symbols representing different areas of Arezzo. The custom of the joust began in the 17th century and continues to this day.

Duomo - inside: art

There are also many interesting artistic expressions inside the cathedral. The first and second picture show the white-marble arca di San Donato ("Saint Donat's tomb"), by Tuscan artists of the 14th century. The third photo depicts the fresco Maddalena by Piero della Francesca, painted around 1465. Finally, the fourth image portrays the cappella Tarlati of 1334: it's the only remaining of the many chapels that decorated the original church.
