We did a cruise last year (and another this coming November)with a day in Livorno. The train station is a short walk (5 minutes) from the dock. The train station in Pisa is about a 30 minute walk to the Tower. Can't remmeber the cost of the train but I remember being pleased so it can't be too much. Make sure you're on the right platform. We waited at the wrong one, missed the first train and had to wait 1.5 hours for the next train. If I recall, the trip was about an hour or so.

train is the solution to your transportation needs: economical, reliable, and frequent. www.trenitalia.com is the official and easy to use website to refer to. Note that you don't need to book in advance for Regional Trains 'R', just buy the ticket from one of the easy-to-use vending machines at the train station when you arrive there, validate the ticket using the yellow machine on the platform and board on to the first available train. Pisa to Florence, one way, take slightly more than an hour and costs around 5.6 euros.

You can definately go to Pisa which is about half an hour to get there by train but I don't think going to Florence would be worthwhile for you depending on how long the ship is in port. You'll probably be staying in Pisa the whole morning which leaves just the afternoon. Florence is between an hour to an hour and a half from Pisa by train then factor in that Livorno is another half hour away from Pisa and you will have to change trains at Pisa to get to Livorno so there could be a wait there. So your looking at travelling 3-4 hrs by train to go and to get back from Florence. Instead of Florence visit Lucca which isn't far from Pisa. Its a beautiful city with big medievel walls that you can walk on around the city. If you want to really see Florence then forget about Pisa and just visit Florence. Happy Travels

Travel Tips for Florence

Stroll

by GeoDenia

Florence isn't exactly an adrenaline-junky's delight, catering more to addicts of caffeine, expensive shoes and naked babies with wings. If you're desperate for a leg stretch and a bit of fresh air, a stroll around the Giardino di Boboli is recommended - the views from here aren't bad either. You can also take full and half-day mountain bike tours of the countryside around Florence, or rent a bike and tangle with the traffic in town. Giardinio di Boboli and the Neptune Fountain.

All in the name of "IL CALCIO"

Being the football crazy country, it wasn't an uncommon scene.

The day I arrived in Florence was a big day for them. All the italian people went on the street in the centre to celebrate their national team beating Bulgaria in the quarter-finals of Euro Championships 2004. They
moved their national flag, made the traffic jam, dancing, singing, painted their faces.......

Boboli Gardens. It's not just...

Boboli Gardens. It's not just the main part behind the palace, but go as far as you can to each side (away from palace) to see excellent fountain mosaics, sculptures, and gardening / stable? buildings on far end of property.

summer clubbing

by sleepflower2 about Meccano

An indoor/outdoor club in the west of the city. I didn't really enjoy the music but probably different now. Bit like a cattle market, sleazy men who see women as objects. Had paid dancers which I liked. Club itself very nice, trees etc outside and nice bars.

The Best Trattoria of Florence

by susancallus about Trattoria Al Trebbio

Trattoria Al Trebbio is the best where to eat the most delicious Italian lunch or dinner! It's very difficult in Italy to choose the best because the choice is too vast! :))) It offers the best on Italian typical food and everything is homemade! My friend and I had two different type of pasta so that we could taste both! :) Mine was Tagliatellini al Asparagus and Tagliatelle di verdura was my friend's choice. We couldn't decide which was the most delicious! The photos can help you to understand! :) Then the director of the Trattoria (Signor Antonio) who was so gentle and handsome with us suggested to take the 'Polpetti Fatti a Casa' and suggested us the desert as well. MMMMMMMMMMMHHHHHHH....SUPER!!!! My suggestion to you is also that you order their own home made wine and you will thank me while you're tasting it! :))) everything we ordered was super buono! :)
