Pitti Palace

by jennette180

Do you think it would be wise to book a ticket for the Pitti Palace prior to our arrival? I didn't know how long the lines would be and also if we have to pay seperatly to enter the gardens...??

DEar Frens ... no need to book here, but for sure it's ALWAYS be good if you book a ticket. Last time, I didn't book a ticket even I travel during a weekend here.

Check carefully because when I went (Sep. '07), it was free the morning I visited (Saturday) the Palace/Gardens (I don't know if it was just that day or every Saturday, or every weeekend...)

The queue may be long on weekend, or easter holiday and so on. In this case advance booking can save you a bit of time.
Just a bit because for security reasons you have to queue AGAIN after you get the tickets, to pass through a metal detector.
Once inside the courtyard you could have one more (shorter) line to enter the gardens.

In Palazzo Pitti are located several Museums and Galleries, whose collections range from porcelains to modern art. Every one has a specific ticket (but the most share the same ticket).

to check every museum entrance fee and opening hours give a look at this site:

Cheers everybody !!

I have the same question: do i need a reservation for visiting Pitti Palace ??
We will rich Florence in March 2009, and in Sunday 22 March we intend to visit the Pitti Palace ( Galleria Palatina with Galleria d'Arte Moderna and Appartamenti Reali Giardino di Boboli with Museo degli Argenti Galleria del Costume and Museo delle Porcellane ). For Galleria degli Uffizi and Galleria dell'Accademia we have already reservations ( at http://www.b-ticket.com/b-ticket/Uffizi/default.aspx ).
For the Pitti Palace it is necesary too ?? If we go at 8:15 a.m. to the entrance of the palace, the line is long ??

Thx in advance !!

Re: Pitti Palace

I didn't have problems when I went (Sep '07), but...

Re: Pitti Palace

by metalactual

3 eur/pers. and I must to buy 2 types of tickets = 12 eur for booking.

The real problem is that they sell the tickets starting with 12:00 o'clock ( first hour to entrance ), altough the Palace is opened starting with 8:15, so we don't have much time to see the entire palat, museums, gardens & stuff.

Travel Tips for Florence

Scooters

by dvideira

As in other Italian cities, motorscooters are very popular in Florence. It's difficult not to notice it... ( you do remember to cross the streets with extreme caution )
The reason of this is quite obvious....it's easier to go around and to find a parking space.

Difficult to have a landscape like that...

by nitz_fi

Every tourist that want to take a look to florence always goes to piazzale michelangelo to see the most beautiful landscape of florence. Ok, no doubt about it, but as written before, each one goes there, it's always full of people, every moment of the day.
What about have a similar and landscape in a very more relax place? Ok, just take a slice of schiacciata and a beer and go to have a picnic dinner on the fiesole hill to see the sunset over florence. (do you want to be romantic? It's perfect!). Let's take bus n°7 to arrive in the central square of Fiesole and take the uphill over the churc. It's quite sloping, but in few minutes you will have the entry of a public garden on your left. Into the garden there is a fun sign about responsability of dog's owner, and going over there is a beautiful belvedere facing florence...wonderful!

Ah, there is a restaurant just in front of the garden...but I've never tasted it

Get to the market for the astmosphere and food!

by MarvintheMartian about Mercato Centrale

The whole San Lorenzo area is great all sorts of shopping from ties, leather goods and tacky t-shirts!
Of course be aware that not everything is at bargain prices and if you look around the corner from the prominent stalls you may find better prices. You can bargain a bit as well.
The large square building is the Mercato Centrale and is on two floors. Much of the downstairs is devoted to meat, cheese and general food shops, upstairs is mostly fruit and veg. Cheese - they will vacume pack for you!
Dried meats.
Porcini mushrooms - check quality around the stalls.
New olive oil and maninated olives.
Fresh coffee (beans or ground).
Also have an expresso in one of the various small cafes - probably the cheapest and best you'll find in the area!
I almost forgot to mention the candied fruit (all sorts of varieties). Best prices for cheese, meat etc, unless you go somewhere more obscure!

To Florence by plane

by HORSCHECK

The airport of Florence (Vespucci Airport) is just outside the town.
Many European low cost airlines fly to nearby Pisa Airport (Galileo Galilei). The Airport of Pisa has an hourly train service to Santa Maria Novella Station in Florence. The trip takes about one hour and costs less than 5 Euro (2003).

Charming Entertainment

by tc0604 about Il Cantatorie

It advertises itself as, “Piatti tipici Fiorentini –accompagnati Don Migliori vivi del chiante e musica dal vivo”. Our lack of Italian is the story here. We were looking for a nice restaurant for our last night in Florence and pulled this one out of the guidebook, which simply recommended it for good typical local food. If theirs is typical local food, then Florentine cuisine is very uneven.

As we finished our meal and I called for the check, the owner waved me off and told us to wait. At first, the entertainment seemed to be an electric piano crooner of indeterminate age. Then, the fireworks started with arias, acting, pop Italian love songs and more antics. The patrons ate it up and several were clearly regulars as they sang along. Add a cup of expresso and a couple of Grappas, and a fine time was had by all. What a delight! The Primia fettuchini with clams was lukewarm and bland. However, the veal chop in truffle cream was superb! Skip an uninspired wine list and opt for the Seco Bianco house white; quite good. The ladies had grilled Gambas on mixed veggies that looked somewhat overcooked, but they loved it. Note that the specialty of the house is beefsteak.
