Comfort and Convenience
Set in a side street within 5 mins walk of David and 10 for the Duomo, the rooms and service here are excellent. Clean rooms and friendly staff right fromthe outset. Set in a quiet sidestreet and if you get a front room , views out over the Tuscan hills.
Great cocktails from a bar man who knows his stuff, but they are not cheap.
Only downside was dinner was not available, but with the great choice of restaurants locally its not a problem

So elegant, I think we ripped them off!
When we got to our room in Hotel Carolus, we looked at each other in grinning disbelief. I cannot believe how nice it was for how much we paid. The room is pretty much standard European hotel size, but with huge vaulted ceilings, two giant, almost floor-to-ceiling windows, one of which looks right out onto the Duomo about a half-kilometer away (the perfect distance). It was tastefully decorated, impeccably clean, with a roomy, modern bathroom (and a shower that could have passed just fine in the US!). On top of that, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful (despite much effort on their part, though, they didn't speak the best English - you really need some remedial Italian to successfully communicate). Location was quite brilliant - close enough to the train station to lug one's huge bag there on foot, but far enough away from the tourist hell that is the Duomo area.
Unique Quality: I really liked where Carolus was located - a very quiet area right off of the Piazza San Marco. It's most definitely in Florence proper, but far enough away from the touristy stuff that you aren't swarmed by Duomo-seekers. I also liked walking home through quiet streets each nights. The hotel was near a ton of internet cafes, and there were lots of young people around constantly.
We paid less than $120 a night and a room like this in Florence should go for about twice that. I believe we booked on hotels.com and no negative experiences there.
