Obvious check-points in...
by JonAdam
Obvious check-points in Florence are Ponte Vechieo (Florence’s most famous bridge, old & impressive, but highly commersed today), Duomo (the impressive cathedral - take your time and climb the tower - the view is just beautiful), Piazza della Signora (marvellous square), Uffizi gallery & Accademia gallery (amazing collections of fine arts) & the Church of Santa Cruce (the resting place of many of Italians most eminent scientists)
Also keep in mind that Florence is a perfect city to stroll around in. When you have seen all this beaufitul things, let yourself get lost in the narrow streets and find the hidden shops and gelaterias of Florence. Piazzale Michelangelo is an amazing place. If you have the time and strength, do climb the hill to this little square with the most beautiful view of Florence and the river Arno.
Holiday Hours
by SinglDiver
Most Florence restaurants are closed for dinner on Christmas Eve, Chistmas, the day after Christmas, and New Year's. On New Year's Eve, more are open, but most offer only a several course, fixed price (and expensive) special dinner. Get your hotel to help you find open restaurants and reserve early, or you may end up without dinner on those special evenings! Similarly, quite a few of the restaurants recommended in VT were closed for a 2-3 week period over the holidays as their owners and staff took vacations as well! So be flexible.
Chiesa di San Miniato al Monte
by AgentJX
Located on a hill high above Florence, this church is worth the climb for both the views it offers of Florence, and the chruch itself. The interior is worth a good walk though, look at the wooden roof and the decor on the wooden beams. Then turn and enjoy the views of Florence.
The beer carousel
by Henrik_rrb about Beer carousel
During Christmas time it's a good choice to go to the Santa Croce church, and visit the piazza there. Sitting outside in december maybe doesn't sounds like a great idea, but the beer carousel at the piazza is really fun!
It's not like an amusment park carousel, as it goes around much slower, but it gives you plenty of time to look around at people passing by, while you sit on the chair zipping on your beer.
Just remember to wear quite much clothes, as it tend to be quite cold.
You can also buy some kind of glue wine, hot wine, that will keep you warm.
Right next to the carousel, also on the piazza, you'll also find a huge christmas market. Was very nice to just let time pass by there.
Think a beer was about 4,5 euro. More or less as much clothes as possible.
Eat here!
by Marpessa about Nuti
Nuti is one of the oldest restaurants in Firenze. It has a few tables out on the street, as you can see from the photo, but majority of their seating is indoors. My friends and I sat indoors. My friends had been to Nuti the previous night and liked it so much that we all went back the next night. Nuti was a great place to eat. The atmosphere was great, very comfortable, service was great, the food - hot and delicious (or cold and delicious when it came to the gelato for desert!). I just remember there being quite a few people in the restaurant and everyone seemed to be chatting, having a great time and enjoying the good food. The atmosphere was just very relaxed.
Nuti serves pizza, pasta, salads, chicken and steak (my friends said the steak was very good here) - as well as other food - their menu was extensive. While I was in Italy I seemed to eat a lot of pizza Margherita, but I couldn’t help myself – it was so nice, and once again I had come to another restaurant where the pizza was great! I also had a side of hot chips (patatae fritte) and gelato for desert.
