Bus Tour to Pisa

by lbalacha

We have set aside a whole day to visit Pisa. Can anyone recommmend good and
economical tour operators who will take us on a daytrip by bus to Pisa and
back ? Would it be cheaper to find such tours online and book from the US or
wait until we reach Florence ? We will be in Florence around the 22nd of Nov.

Re: Bus Tour to Pisa

by mccalpin

Are you looking for a guide to take you to Pisa and show you around, or are you just looking for transportation? If the latter, most people would just hop on one of the frequent local trains that runs between Florence and Pisa (see The regional trains run 1 to 3 times an hour direct (i.e., not non-stop, but no change of train) and the second class one way fare is 5.40 euro.

The regional trains (almost all of the trains on this route are regional trains) do not take reservations - if there is room to stand, you can get on. Therefore, there is no need to buy such tickets in advance - just get them when you arrive in Florence.

The main train station in Florence (Santa Maria Novella) is in the city center, while the main station in Pisa is Pisa Centrale, some 20-30 minutes on foot from the Piazza dei Miracoli (otherwise a short bus or taxi ride).

Note that a number of trains continue on to Pisa San Rossore after Pisa Centrale; this station is actually just 300 or so yards from the Piazza dei Miracoli. We had a discussion on this recently (search for "Rossore" in the Pisa Forum). At the trenitalia website, enter "Pisa San Rossore" for the destination to see the solutions...

Fully agree with what Bill wrote - much cheaper by train, however there is a company that operates a daily coach tour to Pisa from Florence - . We used them for a tour of the Chianti region - guides, coaches OK

we are planning to do this on our way from Florence to Bogliasco - so if we get a train to Pisa San Rossore we won't have the 20 plus minutes walk to town or get a cab or whatever? is there a left luggage at Pisa San Rossore?

Re: Bus Tour to Pisa

Jen, from the previous discussion that we had, I got the impression that San Rossore was a small commuter station...and the trenitalia website shows no left luggage there, which would you're better off stopping at Pisa Centrale anyway...

ah bill - already we are so exhausted by looking at towers - i must say the one in florence is superb although it is not leaning - so we are giving pisa a miss

Travel Tips for Florence

Ponte Vecchio

by KiNyA

Ponte Vecchio is the oldest bridge in Florence. It was built in 1345. There have always been a lot of workshops. In the past from butchers to taners, but nowdays there are mainly jewelries. It is a nice place to walk buy. On one site you can see magnificent Ponte Santa Trinita and on the other way you ca see the Uffizi.

Music Festivals

by jmhenry1123

Do your homework before you leave and see if there are any special activities/festivals going on during your stay.

In May they have the Maggio Musicale Fiorentina. I saw an opera, Ido Meneo, at the Teatro della Pergola.

Tuscan Chianti (regional wine)

by jon_and_may about Everywhere in Florence

Tuscany is famous for their Chianti wine and many shops and bars in Florence sell it.

I wouldn't be able to tell you how to buy Chianti, but I'm sure if you're a wine buff you'll know. Otherwise you can't go wrong with a few expensive bottles as gifts or souvenirs. :)

RyanAir to Florence

by mariocibelli

RYANAIR, the easiest and cheapest way to Florence from London, Brussels, Frankfurt and Hamburg is to use RYanAir to the Pisa Airport and then take the train in to Florence. If you book far enough in advance you generally spend 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of booking with British Airways, Meridiana or Lufthansa.

One of the ways to take advantage of the best deals is to book 2 seperate 1 way tickets, for ex. from UK, UK to Pisa and then another one Pisa to UK. I have travelled to London 11 times in the last year and paid an average of 50 Euros per return ticket.

Great Restaurant With Strawberry Risotto!

by Fritzanity about Osteria de' Benci

Fun restaurant, very popular with the Italian trendy crowd. Great location, inventive food. Has a cave-like basement room, great staff. The combination of taste, ambiance, location, and price is tough to beat in this city (except by maybe Baldovino's). My Florentine host brother shared this one with me... Strawberry Risotto- I've never tasted such an impeccable, inventive dish in my life. I never thought cheesey rice and strawberries would taste so damn good together. This is the kind of dish that opens your eyes to wanting to try all sorts of dishes, in the hope of having such a great surprise again.
