"Strange" animals swimming in the Arno river
by nyperose
I've just returned from a holiday in Florence, and loved to walk by the Arno river. On a pile of wood in the river, I saw several small animals creeping and swimming around. They looked like rats, but I think they very too big and some of them had a long fur.
Does anybody know what sort of animals they are?
Thank you in advance for your replies:-)

Coypu.
I saw them too.
They were originally escapees from fur farms (we have them in the UK too). They're not native to Italy. Their fur is 'nutria'.

shows their extent in Europe. Seems that you may have them in Switzerland too.

It reminds me when I spent a week in Isle sur la Sorgue, Provence, France.
The hotel was by the river, the river was full of ducks, and strangely, every evening duck was on the menu.......
Am I glad that I only ate Pizza Margarita in Florence.....:-) Those cute little animals!

See all the art galleries and museums and go to the cathedral right to the top and see the view Being drunk in the streets of Florence laughing til I nearly wet myself while one of the lads I was with wheeled down the street on an office chair. How silly.
San Firenze
by croisbeauty
The monumental church of San Firenze is one of the rare examples of the 17th century Baroque architecture in the town of Florence. It is, however, transformed into the palace and now it houses The Tribunal of Firenze. The building is situated on ononymous square, right behind the Palazzo Vecchio and in close vicinity to Bargello.
Contemporary art in Prato
by fgfi
The Luigi Pecci Museum of Contemporary Art is worth visiting. It contains one of the most important collections in Italy, housed in an extremely modern complex (1987), planned by Italo Ciamverini. The museum contains temporary exhibits and displays.
Wine Bars and Cellars
by keeweechic
Apart from bars and disco's, there is a Florentine custom is to pass the evenings at wine bars and wine cellars. Normally the wine is good and the atmosphere is relaxed, but they close early, at around one. Some examples are: l'Osteria fuori porta, l'Antica mescita, Pane e vino, la Cantinetta di Verrazzano.
.
At Settignano there is the Sosta del Rossellino. We come back to the places 'for tourists' with reasonable prices at the caffè concerto in Piazza della Repubblica.

My first meal in Firenze
by Callavetta about Toscano
Part of that first wonderful evening in Florence, included a delicious dinner at Toscano. The restaurant was referred to us by the Lombardi son, when we arrived in the city late and hungry. We were not disappointed.
The staff was friendly and welcoming. The wine was red and good. And the pepper beef was to die for!
I've returned to this restaurant twice since and have not been sorry yet. Moderately priced, comfortable and with a menu full of regional speciaties, Toscano is worth a try.
