On to Florence bypassing Rome

by sanggano

I am going to Florence from either Bangkok or Hongkong and wish to avoid passing through Rome. What are the alternative ports of entry to Florence? Many thanks in advance for your help.

The two really major international airports in Italy are Rome and Milan, hence, Milan is a logical choice. There are other international airports at Bologna, Venice, Pisa, Naples, even Florence itself, but they are less likely to serve destinations outside of Europe...so try Milan first...Milan to Florence is also an easy train ride...

What's wrong with Rome?

Re: On to Florence bypassing Rome

by ghosthunter

I assume it is due to the amount of people in the capital.

Whatever your reason of bypassing Rome, land in Milan and take a train to Florence. That is what we did on our last European trip. It is more convenient.

If you are not driving (maybe that's why you want to avoid Rome?) you'll need to take the train.

You'll find details of train times and fares in English here:

All Western European hubs such as Paris, Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt and Munich have direct flights to Florence. You may want to connect in one of these airports and take a flight to Florence. I have flown many times from/to Southeast Asia to/from Florence and found connections above more convenient in term of pricing and scheduling than flying through Milan or Rome.

Check out Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways or any other their airline partners serving the route.

Travel Tips for Florence

Florence Tip

by mjmarble

Most likely my fondest memory of my entire trip was my time spent on the top of the Dome. The entire experience was incredible, beyond words. I just remember it was a partly cloudy day heading towards a clear night and we were one of the last sets of people to head up to the top. The setting sun breaking through the clouds iluminating different parts of Florence and the hills around it will be something I carry with me for the rest of my life. I will do my best to place the rest of this memory and my other Florentine experiences into a travelogue soon. This is a view from atop the Dome which is similar to my many pics... The church just left of center is where Michaelangelo is buried, if I remember correctly.

Bring a dictionary!

by m-joy

If you speak no Italian, bring a dictionary when you would like to try local restaurants and typical food. Some of the waiters I met were quite helpful but were not able to translate the menus in any language I understand. Once I ordered some Gnocci with something else, a strange name in Italien, and the waiter gave me a special smile. He knew that I didn't expect the little big animal on the plate and I had real problems to handle it although it tasted very delicious. Nevertheless it was a very funny evening. If you like surprise-menus, leave the dictionary at home and enjoy it, it won't kill you.

Leather Gloves

by ozalp about Luciano

When we were wandering between Duomo and Piazza della Signoria we saw a small shop which has many leather gloves on its window. I like gloves but I didn’t find the model I wanted in Istanbul. So when I saw the variety of models in Italy I was really impressed. I bought my first pair of gloves in Venice. It was pink. So, I wanted another classic pair when my friends started to look the models.
The gentleman who owns the shop was very kind and helpful. He is a professional; he told our sizes just by looking once. And he told us that he produce the gloves himself. Also there were some hats in the shop. Many many gloves Between 20-40 euros

Transportation: Bus to Siena

Busses to Siena start at Firenze Autostatione Sita in Viale dei Cardona close to the main train station every hour. The blue Sita busses bring you to Piazza Gramsci in Siena. The price is 6,50 Euro one way.

Good Food - Good Price!

by elise_crash about il Grotto di Leo

This wonderful little restaurant is located not far from the Duomo and the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The food is great and the prices are very reasonable, with lots of options to choose from. It is a nice place to eat with friends or just have a nice meal on your own. The staff are also very friendly. I definitely suggest this place out if you want to try the local cuisine! Ravioli di Rose - This is a cheese ravioli with a rose sauce. Rose sauce is pink sauce, sort of a mix of red sauce and cream sauce. Very good!
