Hiring a car and a driver instead of a tour??

by jeanniek8

We are a family of 6 going to Florence for 5 days then Venice for 3 days in mid-April of this year. We have been checking into hiring a car for couple of days of sightseeing outside of the city of Florence. We were thinking of going to Cinque Terre then spend a day out in the Tuscan countryside. Is hiring a car with a driver the best way to go. We would welcome any suggestions as to what to see and how to see it. Any suggestions as to a good company to go thru for hiring a driver and a car?? Thanks

I would use the folks at initaly.com I have used them in the past for apartments as well as friends of mine and have found them to be very reputable. http://www.initaly.com/

take the train to Cinque Terre then use the Water Taxi which will allow you to cover all "fingers" in one day if you time your tours correctly. but no matter as you can catch the train back from any of the villages.

while in Florence, be certain to take the bus or a tour to Fiersole for a sunset dinner or just drink at their great pub.... which overlooks Florence.

also for a couple hour walking tour take the road that wanders through the city and along the back wall of the Piti Palace. It is quite picturesque.

Another reputable firm when it comes to Italy is Crystal Tours Unlimited based in Florida. They are real experts when it comes to Italy and perhaps know some drivers. We hired a car in Florence and then spent 3 nights in Tuscany.. used AutoEurope which is my favorite.

Just to reassure myself. I have driven in Spain, and in the Loire Valley in France. Is driving in Italy any different really? I hear some rumors, but not from anyone with experience, saying Italian drivers are more "surprising" sometimes...........

Travel Tips for Florence

Vista del Ponte Vecchio

by GUYON

have a look at the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge). According to an ancient custom, it is bordered by houses. According to the legend, the poet Dante Alighieri met his loving girl, Beatrice, at the corner of the Ponte Vecchio.
Eventhough, she was younger than him and she married an other man, he was in love for her during his whole life.

Dante's House

by susancallus

Dante's House is on Via Santa Margherita, better known as Via Dante Alighieri! If you are near Palazzo Vecchio and ask the italian police (there are so many there!) :) They will help you for the right direction.

tuscan leather

by coolswizzle about Leather

the street leading to ponte vecchio from the area of the duomo is where you can find lots of shops for leather goods especially gloves.

i bought a pair of black leather gloves with cashmere lining for about 45 euros. i think the price is ok for the quality of soft leather that i got and of course the cashmere lining helped too.

i use it all the time in the winter and it never fails to remind me of florence. so i got more than my money`s worth!

Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci (PERETOLA)

I cannot begin to say enough good things about the Florence airport. I am usually very critical of my city, but this is great. First of all it is 15 minutes from the downton, second as all the flights are within Europe (changing to International) the check-in time is 30 minutes before departure. So, if I am flying to NY and the plane leaves at 715, I wake up at 6. Much better than racing to Fiumicino (the ROme airport) having to leave home almost 5 hours before departure.

The airport is served by: Air France, Air Littoral, Swiss, Austrian, Tyrolean, Lufthansa, Alitalia, KLM, Meridiana, Brussels Air, and I think Air Transylvania (flights to Romania).

Daily flights to: Rome, Milan, Catania, Palermo, Cagliari, Bologna, Zurich, Nice, Barcelona, Paris, Munich, Franfurt, London, Paris, TImisoara (Romania), Vienna, Amsterdam and Brussels.

You can get to the airport by taxi, city bus (1 Euro, but 40 minutes from the station) and a private bus service (about 6 Euros).

Fish and "meet" restaurant

by fgfi about Artegaia_CLOSED_now different owners

Artegaia is a very nice restaurant not in the city centre, just down the hill of Fiesole.
The atmosphere is very relaxing and comfortable. Basically a fish restaurant, (and fish is very fresh) Artegaia also propose a meat menu. I really like the mixed seafood appetizer but actually everything is delicious: pasta dishes, hand made desserts and nice wines.
