Travel Tips for Florence

Florence Tip

by satori157

Ive such fond memories of the main square in Florence. This is where many of the scenes of 'Hannibal' with Anthony Hopkins was filmed. Knowing the history of this square, as this is where the bonfire of the vanities took place as well as the many wonderful statues(the rape of the sabine woman and Belini's Perseus) can add to the squares lure. I recommend having a glass of chianti and watch all tourists walk on by

Italians LOOOVE their scooters

by guell

If you really want to try to blend in with the locals, you have to rent yourself a scooter. "Why are scooters so popular?" you may ask. Try driving a car through the narrow Italian streets, and you'll quickly learn why.

In reality, you don't need a motor vehicle at all in Florence. We walked everywhere.

Duomo in Siena

Visit the Duomo Church in Siena.

The inside of the Siena Duomo (it is really worth a look!) is much nicer than the Duomo in Florence...the outside is much nicer too if you ask me...

It's open daily January to mid March from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 5 pm, mid March to October from 9 am to 7:30 pm, November and December 7:30 am to 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 5 pm. Entry is free but modest dress is required.

There's not much of a nightlife in Florence, at least not like you would find in Paris or London or even Rome. Your best bet is to find a spot in an outdoor cafe and settle in for an evening of wine and people watching. Florentines are very stylish but not obnoxious about it. I equate them best with New York City and its trendy areas. Everyone has a cell phone. Everyone wears leather somewhere.

filet mignon with blueberry sauce!

by deedeechi about acqua al due

acqua al due has it all, delicious food, a great ambience, and charming servers. its quite a task to get a table there, so make sure to call head to make a revservation. + 39 055 28 41 70 the owner, gianni is almost always there if he is not at the other location in san diego and he will undoubtly check by your table to chat. the atmosphere is warm and friendly and plates signed by backpackers and fine-diners alike adorn the walls. you MUST try the bistecca al mirtillo ( filet mignon with blueberry sauce) it sounds weird... but trust me its to die for. while living there i would save my dining expenses for the week just to have this dish once a week! the assagio di primi is great as well, its a sample platter of four different pastas... this restaurant is amazing, you must try it once in your life
