Florence is even more walkable than Rome. It is a small city.

Major attractions include:

the Uffizi
the Accademia
(best book tickets in advance for both to avoid queues....many VT-ers us www.tickitaly.com)
the Duomo, Baptistery and Campanile
the Ponte Vecchio
many ancient churches, most of which contain great works of art
many other museums and galleries
the Medieval streets of the Bargello area
the market around San Lorenzo

You can take a bus up to nearby Fiesole (inthe hills about 20 minutes away) to visit the Etruscan museums and get great views of the city,or take the bus to Siena (a lovely town), or the train to Pisa (for the Campo dei Miracoli and Leaning Tower......about an hour on the train).

Look at the VT pages about these places for more info and tips.

The official Florence tourist information site is:

noted your three identical posts for italy cities - perhaps you should buy a basic guide book like Fodor or Frommer or maybe Lonely Planet and read through it selecting sites that interest you. With more specific knowledge, we might be able to offer some meaningful advice.

The museum which I liked best was the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. It shows details of the cathedral which I found absolutely fascinating.

Travel Tips for Florence

Try our 'brioche and cappuccino' breakfast.
Visit the center of the town, walking in his narrow roads; on sundays go and see one of the home footbal matches of our team 'Fiorentina' People in general, and the sweet country around the city

How odd

by craic

There are no flowerbeds outside the station. At least in November. Maybe it is a riot of colour in the high season.

BTW the station is small and easy to understand. And very very extraordinarily ugly and shabby from the outside. Goodness me, it is plain.

Greve en Chianti. Take a day trip from Florence and visit the Chianti wine country. We took a bus, packed a lunch and went for a hike through the countryside and the vineyards. There were vast fields of sunflowers in bloom.

Autostrada

by sunchasers

The Autostrada is equal to the U.S. Interstate Highway system (more specifically the toll turnpikes around the U.S.). The speed limit is about 130 km/hr. You pay for the distance you drive. When getting on or off, unless you have a pass, you go to the far right line and get a ticket. You do the same, when getting off, hand the ticket to the agent and he tells you how much you owe.

A few differences with the Autostrada. Once you get on, you are on. If you miss your exit, it can be a pain in the ass because there aren't as many turn-offs and you can't simply get off, go over the overpass and backtrack as you would in the U.S. Also, the on and off ramps have quite tight turns so you have to go fairly slow when exiting and entering. This can cause problems merging with the high speed traffic. Oh, and please let the Italians drive on the left lane, slower drivers should keep right. The shoulders also aren't that broad, but one nice thing, if you do break down, there are plenty of SOS phones en route. And lastly, for gas and food, you don't have any other choice then stopping at the Autogrill. There will be different gas stations along the way (though most are located at or near the Autogrill). The Autogrill is essentially a mini-mall that has a variety of food options. It's a very nice concept, but it tends to concentrate drivers all in one location (since this is there only stopping option). You will find burger king, pizza hut, a wine and cheese shop, convenience store with car items, etc. at the Autogrill.

If you use Michelin's website, you can calculate how much your journey will cost and where the tolls are located.

Excellent food and atmosphere

by StuartSage about Ristorante La Grotta Guelfa

A traditional Tuscan restaurant close to the Pza Republica but far enough away from the crowds to be a bit less touristy.

The meal we chose was from a set tourist menu - the only one I saw during our stay but it was composed of Florentine specialities and boy were they all tasty!!!

We sat inside rather than outside and the atmosphere was better for it as we were surrounded by Italians rather than the UN!!!

Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant - good food, good wine, good atmosphere - all for a reasonable price!
