Albergo La Scaletta - a gem in Oltrarno

You wouldn't expect much from the outside; walk through the hallway, take the small elevator to 3, and walk into a pensione/hotel that makes you feel welcome from the first minute.

The owner Barbara, and her son Alfredo are WONDERFUL! The resident turtle on the roof deck, who has been there for 30+ years, is a neighborhood institution.

Unique Quality: The roof terrace has probably as good or better view of the entire city as the Piazza Michelangelo.

Home away from home in Firenze

We have stayed here everytime we have been to Florence. Why? because it is clean and cozy, very friendly, has a rooftop garden with a great view of Florence and it has a lift!

It is located on the Oltra Arno (the other side of the Ponte Veccio) so it is midway between the center of the old town and Santa Spiritu. This takes you out of the guided tour crowds and places you next to the Pitti Palace.

It is listed in several of the budget guide books, so I recommend that you book ahead, but if not, the Madame will make every effort to accomodate you, even moving her son out to empty a room.

The rooms are recently renovated, clean and big. The toilets are not exceptional, but big enough to move in and very clean.

They have a couple of rooms big enough for a family of several. They serve breads and jam for breakfast and you can schedule a dinner there if you are feeling adventurous.

Unique Quality: Spend some time on the rooftop when you get there. It is awe-inspiring and it is here you will meet the cat and get a peek at the turtle. Order a glass of wine and relax.

8 in Florence this February- La Scaletta

by BobbyTinCT

We are 2 families of 4, which includes 4 teenage girls, spending 4 days in Florence this February. We have reserved 3 rooms at La Scaletta. Though Rick Steves seems a fan very few else say much positive. Can anyone provide some insight?
Is the room decent relative to price of about 100 euros/ night? Anything better for the same in good location?
Many thanks in advance!

I'd look at the reviews on this site:

Not very good. Even Rick Steves' site has a pretty bad review.

I'll be in Florence in Feb with two teenaged girls too.

We had a good experience with family of four -2 daughters in Santo Spirito. it is 10 minutes walk from Santa Maria Novella (train station) and 10 minutes walk to town or Ponte Vecchio.

Emilio was a gracious host.
