A friendly, welcoming place
I really liked this B&B. It's got the trimmings (think wrought-iron bed), friendly, helpful staff (they have great restaurant recommendations and they will volunteer to reserve for you - you don't even have to ask for it), and a cozy ambiance set amidst a refurbished building. The location, though a five-minute walk from Stazione di Sta Maria Novella, is along a dark, narrow alley, which could put off some security-conscious tourists. The plus factor? It's in front of a popular hostel where you can get cheap beer (and bottled water), and hang out with some fellow young travelers.

Location, Location, Value
Skip the cabs -- 5 minute walk from train station. Rooms are a good size (bathrooms are small) owners are at the desk all day. Priced around $150 depending on date. I'll stay here whenever I'm in Florence

Don't Judge This Hotel By The Exterior
If you pass this hotel, you will think it couldn't possibly be nice. The building is really ugly on the outside. But then many of the buildings in Florence are. The owner, Mario, told me over the phone not to judge the hotel by what the building looks like. I took his advice and didn't and booked a room there. It was, indeed, a very charming tiny hotel, charming owner, and extremely clean. A pleasure to stay in this three star hotel.
A single is between 70 and 80 Euros.
Unique Quality: Clean rooms, comfortable, cozy, nice staff.

Close to the train station
We have stayed at Mario's 3 times and we have always been happy with the hotel. The breakfasts are very nice. They have a nice sitting room that you can order drinks in and relax after a hard day. Only a short walk to the major tourist sites. Also, Mario's is only a block from the train station.

Cozy Hotel
Hotel Mario's is conveniently located within walking distance of the train station. You will need to get your luggage up a flight of stairs when you arrive. Very friendly and helpful staff; small, but clean rooms; and a fresh flower and fruit left nightly. The negative of this hotel was the showers. The bathroom was REALLY small. Once you managed to maneuver yourself inside, the shower doors were accordian style. The water is supposed to stay inside the door area (no drainage tub). Needless to say, that doesn't happen. The floor ends up drenched every time. It was pretty frustrating, and made the overall experience not very pleasant.
Unique Quality: Out of the five hotels we stayed at in Italy, Hotel Mario's definitely served the best cappuccino during breakfast!

Unique Quality: Small, twenty rooms or so, on second floor of building. Very hospitable. We depended on them to pick out a place to eat every night and they were all great.
