Uffizi Gallery

by Natalya2006

We will be in Florence 30.09.2009-04.10.2009 and want to visit Uffizi Gallery. Do we have to buy tickets online in advance for that period? Is there many people to visit Gallery?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Florence is busy all year round with visitors. These include many organised tour groups, many European visitors taking advantage of budget flights to Pisa and many others.

You could risk not buying tickets in advance, as long as you are happy to also risk queuing, possibly for an hour or more. Every time I've visited Florence (always well out of season.and you are going in the 'shoulder' season) the Uffizi queues have been long.

It's up to you. But the official site for buying advance tickets is here, if you want to:

There's always too many people outside the Uffizi. It's not necessary to buy your ticket on line, but you can get it in advance at some booth in Florence. I think they are sold outside Orsanmichele church too.

I would highly recommend ordering tickets in advance online. Just print out the confirmation page and present it to the office across the street from the main entrance - very simple and easy. I was glad I ordered online, as long que lines had two hours wait, when I visited museum a few years ago.

Definitely worth while to order in advance. When the lines are at their worst there is even a line for the pre-ordered tickets - but it is much, much shorter.

Thank you, friends, for your replies! I'll buy online.

Travel Tips for Florence

Stay at the hostel on the hill...

by canuckcj

Stay at the hostel on the hill (can't remember the name so bare with me). It also has a camp ground in the back. If the hostel is booked out stay at a family home, a pension. This is fun because you can get to know the real people of the country. They can also tell you the best places to visit.

Wine tasting

by sniem

In Florence there are numerous enoteca's wine bars where you can drink good wines and eat a small snack like crostini. Normally you can drink most of the wine's even the good ones by the glass. My favourite place is again in Via dei Neri. "All antico Vinaio" is very small so there is no room for tables and people often stand outdoors. Daniele the owner offers a great range of tuscan wines - Frescobaldi for instance- and some fantastic crostini or porchetta made in his wife's rosticerria Giulano Centro on the other side of the street.

See the Synagogue. Daytrips: Go to Lucca, Puccini's home town. I will never forget, at the Casa Puccini, the curator's offer to play arias at my request, as I was his sole visitor at the time. Take the local bus to Siena, which banned cars in the 60s and gives you a feel for what the city-states must have felt like in their glory days. Plus, the Duomo of Siena is worth a visit by itself, as is its main 'square.' Try some Tuscan ribollito for a quick side trip to heaven!

Fresh Phish

by cjg1 about Tenax

This club in Florence is where I saw my one and only Phish show. Not being a big fan I went because everyone else was. Had a good time and it was quite funny to me to see all the people leaving the show starkly contrasted by the Italians waiting to come in and dance the night away. For shows there didnt seem to be a dress code. But afterwards you need to be well dressed to stay and take in the nightclub scene.

Fast Local Food

by Applelyn about Hot Pot

It is the only restaurant I tried. The ambience is pretty cosy and good for a quick lunch especially when you are touring a place. I like their local cuisine like the ribollita. I like ribollita as it is very soft and of cos...healthy. I like the chick peas in it.
