San Gimignano and Siena

by adamparhi

Hi,

Do you recommend on taking organized tour to San Gimignano and Siena (like http://www.toursinitaly.net/tours/tourDetail.cfm?tour_id=7608) from Florence, or traveling there alone using train or bus?

Thanks,
Adam

probably the best way to see these two cities in one day as far as economy of time is to drive. by public transit, you will be on both trains and busses, without going into detail. therefore, if you do not have a rental car, a tour would be considerable easier and a more effective use of time.

we took a tour - it wasn't particularly expensive, and we then knew what we were looking at. Guide was English, probably a retired school mistress.

I'd prefer on my own and by bus.

I took a tour, we were a very small group and had a wonderful tour guide. I spent a wonderful day.

Do you remember the tour name, or how did you get to it?

Re: San Gimignano and Siena

I did the tour with this company:
http://www.italy.artviva.com/tours_category/14/Tuscany_Tours

I have details about it on my Florence page.I paid 120 Euro, which I first thought was very much, but it was worth every cent!

I'd looked at toursinitaly.net/tours.......
that tour goes also to Monteriggioni, nice. but they leave too late in the morning (9:00)
I would do it as I wrote here few days ago..

Between San Gimignano and Siena no motorway in a area which is one of the best of Tuscany.

We used San Gimignano as our base for 10 days, staying right on San Giovanni Strada and, to be honest, I don't see the need for a tour guide in either city. Part of the fun of Italy is roaming the streets and shops, stopping for a gelato (of which San Gimi has an award winning gelateria in Piazza di Cisterna) and just moving along at an 'Italian pace'.

Taking a tour of the Duomo in Siena might be something you'd like if you'd like to find out more about the it. If you have a good guide book, you can get the nuts and bolts about each town and site.

Can you see both in the same day? Yes, but you'll only hit the highlights. San Gimi has great shopping, better than Firenze in my opinion, and all on San Giovanni. Great restaurants too (Don't miss Chiribiri and bring cash... no credit cards).

Siena is home to the Palio race in the Campo and you'll see small neighborhood areas called Contrada's that are the various sections that will race in the Palio. Pantera, Cicciolia, etc, etc. Look for the character in each area to find out which one you're in. The Duomo was also to be the largest in Italy but it never was completed. You'll see the other walls outside of it.

If you want to really enjoy them, take a day each.... if you want, you could do San Gimi and Volterra (known for it's alabaster) in the same day and just down the road from each other.

Travel Tips for Florence

The San Lorenzo marketplace,...

by Murphtique

The San Lorenzo marketplace, with its stalls of
leather goods, clothing, ceramics, etc. is a must.
The variety is terrific and you can use your
bargaining skills to bring the prices down. While
there you can go into the Mercato Centrale, the
central market, to get fresh produce, cheeses, etc. My fondest memory is finding a wonderful
restaurant for our first dinner, eating outside
under the big cloth umbrellas, sharing all 4 of our
amazing dinners on that sunny day while an
accordian player entertained us.

WHAT TO WEAR IN FLORENCE

by ForestqueenNYC

So many of the forum posts ask the question of what to wear while in Florence. Having lived there for two years 15 years ago and then a month 3 years ago, my advice is to dress as comfortably as possible and above all wear your most comfortable shoes, be prepared for really hot weather in the summer, cold in the winter, and rain at anytime--it's not like California, and don't worry about dressing like Italians, you can't. Only if you are going to a posh restaurant, Harry's for example, will you need something somewhat dressy. And if you are planning to go into a church you must wear appropriate clothing, that is you must have your arms covered and no shorts or mini skirts.

Giardino delle rose

by fgfi

The rose garden is located below the Piazzale Michelangelo and offers one of the the best view of Florence.

You can walk up from the San Niccolò Church along Via Monte alle Croci. At the crossroads turn left on Via San Salvatore al Monte running along the Rose Garden. You can enter the garden at the lower gate. If you prefere you can walk or drive up along Viale Giuseppe Poggi; you will see the garden’s sign on your left, or you can walk down from Piazzale Michelangelo (one level / terrace below).

You will find here1,020 types of roses with total of around 4,000 plants, but also a wonderful cityscape with the Arno valley and the hills beyond.

Gardino dell Rose is free but open only 6 weeks a year, May 1 through June 16, every dau from 8am to 8pm. In 2007 they are planning to open it for a longer period.

Fun!

by CourtneyLyn about Loonies

Loonies is a fun place. It is sometimes a little overpopulated by tourists, but nice just the same. They have live music some nights, good djs on other nights. The staff is really friendly and drinks are good.

best ice-cream in the world!!

by lana82 about Carabe

Skip all the fancy gelaterias in the main streets and go to this family run sicilian ice-cream parlour. It is situated in Via Ricasoli, goes straight from Duomo to the square where Academia is. This is something you defenitely don't want to miss, when in Florence. The flavour that ice-cream has, amazing. When we discovered it, we went there at least once a day. Take any flavour everything is delicious. the shops doesn't look that good from outside, it is also rather small, but defenitely the best ice-cream i ever had. everything
