Parking outside of Florence

by helenslea

We are travelling from Venice and do not want to drive into Florence. Is there a train station where we could park our car easily and safely for the day and catch a train into Florence?

Re: Parking outside of Florence

Most train stations in Italy are near the center of town (except Venice, where it is on the Grand Canal). Usually there is a parking lot right at the station. It would depend on what time of day you arrive in order to find parking. Why not park at the station in Venice and take the train to Florence? But if you are not planning on returning to Venice, simply park at the station before Florence and take the train back there later. PRATO is still quite a distance from Florence, but should have parking.

There are station car parks, of course, but as noted whether you find a space depends on what time of day you arrive.

I cannot advise on the availability of parking at stations outside Florence itself, but there is a list of Florence parking here:

http://www.florence-accom.com/florence-guide/florence-car-parking.aspx

I assume you are not returning to Venice (you certainly don't need a hire car there) but if you are then it is much more sensible to take the train to Florence, as suggested above. Times and fares in English here:

The prior post is excellent but to add to it should you drive to Florence, one suggestion would be to park in the neighborhoods ourside of the city proper and use local bus or taxi transport.

Local parking can be definitlly "spotty" so it could consume time finding a place. Another option if you plan to stay for a night would be to park at the hotel and then use local transport.

This is information coming from the highway authorities:

<<Between Firenze Nord and Firenze Sud, the Tuscany Region, the Province of Florence and the Municipal Councils of Calenzano, Sesto Fiorentino, Campi Bisenzio, Florence, Scandicci, Impruneta, Bagno a Ripoli and Lastra a Signa have agreed with Autostrade per l'Italia on a series of works, among which:

(...)
* 6 "park 'n ride" car parks, among which Scandicci and Certosa
(...)

The website is http://www.autostrade.it/en/opere/a1_barb.html?initPos=2
I don't know the status of the works though.

Alternatively you could drive around Florence to Firenze Sud (south) and exit here. If you activate the "parking" option in www.viamichelin.com for Florence you will see that there is a parking site off the highway and after Via Agnelli and Via Marco Polo. Here you can either take a bus or a taxi.

Travel Tips for Florence

Go visit the Duomo. It is stunning inside an outside and dominates the city as the picture shows. Spend some time just wandering around taking it all in. The interior of the dome is a magnificent depiction of the final judgement.

Capital City of Tuscany Region...

by kedi+

Firenze is known as the capital city of Tuscany Region.. Where you eat and drink good.. Tuscany is the region I like more in Italy.. You can find the best vine here, best tipical dishes, best bread, best landscapes.. That's why so many ppl like to live in campagnas of this region..

Caffé Santa Trinita

by Redang

This caffé is in Oltrarno, the south part of the Arno river, and it's close to Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti besides some other churches in this part of the city.

I bring it just in case you want to have a coffee or cappuccino and you want to avoid the touristy restaurants/caffes, so that, it's much cheaper.

My favorite nightclub

by CourtneyLyn about Montecarla

This place is a really intimate environment which consists of three floors exquisitely decorated and crowded with plush chairs, sofas, and I think a couple beds. It is a great place to bring a date or just to hang out with a few friends. The music is always good, but not too loud or overbearing. There are also board games, coloring books and notebooks scattered around. You can draw a picture or jot down a poem or thought, and read those that others have left. Drinks are a little pricey and the top floor is often very hot, but it's worth it.

The taste of Chianti

by AlexDJ about Locanda degli Scopeti

Strategically situated in the immediate vicinities of the Chianti Area, and just 6 kilometers from Florence, this restaurant-hotel is ideal for those who love the green of the countryside and intend to organize a fully relaxing stay in touch with Florence's artistic beauties and the splendour of Tuscan hills.
The room is not very big, even though in the warmer seasons you can eat sitting outside.
The tables are really special, because they are made by using the old Singer sewing machines (there is still the wheel and the pedal at each table!). Meat is really special. The traditional "fiorentina", the thick bleeding steak is the best dish of the restaurant, but I like also fried vegetables and the several kinds of pasta (during the right season try their speciality with mashrooms inside!).
