Re: off season dates

One is tempted to say "never", but you probably want a serious answer ;-)

For the cheapest months, I would say late January to mid March and November to early December (you may get lucky in late October, too). Avoid major holidays (like Easter)

But also check out August(?). In Rome, for example, some places drop their prices in August because all the locals have gone to the beach - not as low as low season, but still lower than high season. On the other hand, August is hot and sweaty in much of Italy, so it's really only better than, say, July, if the price is cheaper ;-)

Certainly the weather is nicest (to my preferences) after October 1st, when it has cooled down (pleasant days and cool nights) - autumn is definitely my most favorite season in Italy...

Florence is an extortion whenever you go, but just having been I have to say it was worth it and you will benefit from the best food in the whole of Italy!

The season officially 'begins' with Easter weekend, when hotel prices will be 80 -300% higher than later in the Summer, so if money is an option, go at least the weekend after Easter to benefit from that saving!!

Florence is very touristic destination.
November, January, February and March are low season times.
If you want to visit Museo dei Offici, be prepared to wait a long time and to get tickets for another day if you stay in high season.

Travel Tips for Florence

Lots of shopping opportunities

by meteorologist1

There are lots of shopping opportunities near the Duomo, and between it and Palazzo Vecchio. Many of these streets are pedestrian only. Here you will find stores that sell clothing, gifts, etc. and here you will also find great Italian restaurants and lots and lots of ice cream places. Florence is supposed to have the best ice cream in Italy.

Soccer Game

by maspad

If you're in the city during soccer (football) season and have some time to spare, going to see a game is one of the best ways to get a taste of the locals when they're at their most frenzied and energetic. I don't care too much for soccer, but I fully enjoyed watching and listening to the crowds cheer on their teams. One surprise for me - the opposing team's fans (the game I saw was Florence vs. Sienna) was kept in a locked, sectioned-off portion of the stadium throughout the game! The fans didn't seem to mind, it kept crowd violence from occurring, and it was definately a first for me in terms of what I've seen at professional sports events.

Food Markets

by sue_stone about Mercato Centrale

Mercato Centrale is a fabulous 19th century covered market.

You can come here to pick up ingredients for a cheap lunch, a meal or just a browse through the colourful fresh produce.

We were particularly intrigued by some of the items on offer in the meat section.....not the kind of things you see at Tesco!! The fruit and veg all looks delicious.

I got here by train. The station Firenze SMN is located in the very centre of the city. It's very close to all the sites one must visit when in Florence (about 10 minutes walk to The Dome).
Florence is one of that cities that must be seen on foot. You can walk everywhere and admire the beautiful views without getting tired.

Good restaurant

by deebum25 about Trattoria Antellesi

Our first food in Florence. My husband made better food choices than I did. We got there right before the kitchen closed at 3 but they were happy to serve us. I had a very good clams with linguine dish while my husband had an excellent swordfish carpaccio with fresh fennel and for my main I had a chicken breast with a green salad. The chicken was rather bland but I guess that's what I get for ordering a plain chicken breast! My husband had pasta with homemade ragu and it was delicious. The house red was also very good.
