Panino con il lampredotto
by fgfi
I think only in Florence you can taste a lampredotto sandwich. Lampredotto is the final part of the cow's stomach and has a dark brown colour. I know it sounds not very attractive, but is really one of the most interesting thing to experience in Florence. I started eating lampredotto just a few years ago ( before I thought it was simply disgusting) and I can assure you it's delicious. If you prefer you can ask for a Sbucciato wich is the lampredotto withouth the white skin (which is the fatty part ). The bread is dipped in the broth and the sandwich is served with a hot red chili sauce or a a green parsley sauce.
Easily missed details.

Whilst you are visiting the Duomo do take the time to study the exterior.
There are all sorts of fascinating bits of carving, especially around the main entrance.
I particularly like the very strange creature in the main photo, and the man who has drunk rather too much wine. There are some pretty fierce angels too.
Driving in Florence
by mileslunn
Like most European cities, Florence doesn't use a grid and in fact can be extremely difficult navigating around, so best to have a map handy and know all the street names you need to follow to get to your destination. Street signs are on the sides of buildings so pay close attention. In addition drive carefully as Italian drivers have a reputation of not liking rules and rarely signal or follow the rules, so don't assume everybody will follow the rules. Especially watch out for the scooters who have a strong tendency to cut in front of cars without warning.
Best Restaurant in the World!
by PolyAna about La Giostra
Located on a side street in Firenze, the facade of La Giostra could fool you into thinking that it's just another hole-in-the-wall italian establishment. But, housed in an old storage room for a Florentine carousel, La Giostra will exceed even the most srtingent expectations. The food is out-of-this-world and the wine list leaves nothing to be desired. The best dish on the menu is the Pear and Pecorino Romano Ravioli. It saddens me to talk about them because I won't be having any for a long time. The second best dish is the shrimp and lime appetizer salad, which is a culinary masterpiece. Last but not least, the wine list is amazing. If you're lucky, you'll even get to go down in the cellar with il Principe and sample some of his personal favorites.
