Making a reservation for Academia Gallery
by SakRaghu
Hi,
I will be in Florence on Nov 22nd and leave on Nov 24th. I plan to go see the Academia Gallery and Uffizi Museum on Nov 23d. Is there someway I can make a reservation online or over the phone without having to pay whole lot of "processing/handling" fees.
Thanks
Raghu

You can book both venues at:

It is just a few euros more and you avoid hours of waiting. Those folks waiting in line do not have the look of someone enjoying their vacation.

By phone, you only pay 3 "extra" euros; online, a crazy amount of extra money, so, by phone.

Actually, the above is no longer true. Until about a month ago the only online option you had for prebooking tickets was with a ticket broker type agency that charged outrageous fees for the service, often doubling the ticket price.
Finally, Italy stepped into this century and you may now purchase tickets online DIRECT through the official museum webisite given above. they still only charge you the additional 3 euro reservation fee, the same one you will pay if you make a reservation onsite or call*(which by the way incurs a further charge to you for the international phone call!)
So if you make it at the official website, it will be the same price now as calling. Hooray for that!!
And don't be cheap about this - the 3 euro fee instead of the 3 hour or more wait in line ( no joke - I spoke to people last year who were waiting 4 hours and more...) make it an investment well worth it.
Ciao! LL
Travel Tips for Florence
Short, easy trip to Pisa
by meteorologist1
From Florence it is easy to take a regional train to Pisa, which is about an hour west of the city by train. In Pisa you can see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. You only need about half a day to visit Pisa (if you're only going to visit the area around the Leaning Tower). So don't miss this oppurtunity when you have finished visiting Florence!

Pisa!

Although Florence is a fabulous city and there is loads to see and do there, if you fancy a day trip, why not visit Pisa!
Pisa is a gorgeous town, famous for its Leaning Tower of course, but it has much more to offer as well!!
It takes only 1 hour to catch the train from Florence to Pisa, making it the perfect place for a day trip.

For Large Purchases
by Jmill42 about About VAT
As I needed a nice jacket for the wedding, I went to a local store and purchased one. In Italy, and the rest of Europe for that matter, purchases over 150 Euro are eligible for a VAT refund.
The procedure goes like this. At most eligible stores, there is a counter that handles VAT refunds. After you purchase your item, you go to this counter and you fill out a form, which you then take to a VAT refund office, or you can mail it in. What's good about Florence is that it has several instant refund shops. The one I went to, and the easiest to find is on Ponte Vecchio. You bring the form and your passport, and the refund will be given to you in USD. The only catch for the instant refunds, is that you HAVE to get it stamped by a customs official when you exit the EU. You mail that form in and you are done.
Free bikes
by fgfi
Firenze Parcheggi, the public garage authority, has set up bike stands all over Florence providing free bikes from 8 am to 7.30 pm, on a daily basis! You can return bikes to any of the sites, which include the train station, Piazza Strozzi, Via della Ninna near the San Lorenzo Market, Palazzo Vecchio and large public parking lots.
For more info you can visit the website which offers also an english version.
Best pizza
by CourtneyLyn about Osteria Benci
The pizza here is the best in Florence. It is not only a pizzeria, there are many other meal selections as well. Also, they have great house wine. During the warmer months there is a lot of seating outside, and it is a great street for people watching. It also serves food a lot later than many other restaurants.
