Shortcut into Uffizi Museum / Best way to park the car

by MTBManiac

Hi,

My wife and me are looking forward to our Tuscany journey in June/July. One of the sightseeing spots we need to go is the Uffizi Museum. From earlier trips to Florence we know that there are long queues at the ticket counter.
I wonder if it is a good idea to stand up real early and be the first at the ticket counter? Or is buying tickets online the safest way?

As we stay near Siena, we come to Florence by car - do you have an advice where it is best to park the car outside of the city and take the train / bus?

Thank you very much in advance,

Mario

If you will be there in the busy season, then yes, buying your ticket in advance online is the best way to go.

There are different parking areas in Florence. Have look at my parking tips:

Yes, definitely get your ticket ahead of time if you are sure whenyou will be there; we did, and it saved a lot of time and were so happy not to be standing in the other line! There is a special window to go to just prior to your designated timeframe.

Agree.there are queues even in low season, and you cannot be sure that there will not be a long queue when you want to visit.

Everyone, of course, 'gets there early' to avoid the queues!

You can buy tickets from online agencies (with commission, of course), but the official website is:

Don't know how you are coming up to Florence, but we park in Grassina and take the bus into Florence. Parking is free at the athletic fields and you buy a bus ticket at the tabac across from the bus stop.

Had you thought of simply taking the train from Siena? That might be easiest. The train goes right to the center of Florence where all the sights are.

Do buy your tickets to Uffizi ahead of time. We were there way off season and stood in line for 4 hours. We did NOT enjoy the museum after the wait. Use the official web site or even pay a fee someplace else, but get the tickets ahead of time. You may have a short wait even with a ticket.

Travel Tips for Florence

You must shop for leather! ...

by shdw100

You must shop for leather! The prices are cheap and the quality is excellent! I need to go back to get me some nice leather gloves again for racing! Seeing myself (or should I say 'David' that Michealangelo did) was quite impressive, as well as his other works of art. The Duomo was awesome, and the doors on the baptistry were fantastic

Stand while you drink at Bars.

by wen_viaggio

Like so many bars in Italy, you'll find that most people stand up and drink their coffees at the bar counter(which has no stools) instead of sitting down. That's because you'll most likely be hit with a 'coperto'- cover charge, on your bill should you sit down at a table to enjoy even just a cup of espresso.

So do what the locals do, stand up at the bar counter and sip your coffee or munch your panino(sandwich).

Also take note that if order a order a 'caffe' (Eg. "Un caffe, per favore.") you'll be given an espresso; the staple coffee of the Italians. So if want a regular coffee(with milk) you'll have to ask for 'caffelatte'. Eg. "Un caffelatte, per favore." :)

Citywalls

by tompt

After leaving through the St George gate take a sharp left turn and decend along the citywalls( via di Belvedere). At your left side are the impressive citywalls (1258) at your right it is green, olivetrees and cypress are making you feel so out of the city.

Los paseos de compras...

by fga

Trattorias of Toscana

by shirez

As i figured out you can eat good food almost every small hidden restaurants in Firenze.
The difference between restaurants in Budapest and Firenze are that a place in Budapest where you can have good food usually really pays attention to how it looks like from outside.

The other difference is that if a waiter doesnt come right away when you finish your meal, or doesnt ask what else you want, it is considered to be not polite. In Firenze they just let you take your time and enjoy your lunch.

The third difference is that in Firenze you dont give tip when paying. In Hungary, especially Budapest you give 10% of the bill as a tip if you are satisfied with the restaurant, the service and the meal. You dont give tip only if you want to really show you were not satisfied. You dont have to give 10% though, you can round up the bill to some hundreds (note: 1 EUR = 250 HUF). Tips have to be added when paying, and not left on the table. (ps maybe i should have wriitten this tip to the Budapest page...)
