Calcio Fiorentino?

by 2BellaItalia

It appears that we will be in Florence during the Calcio Fiorentino event (?) in June. It is listed on Rick Steves' Festival listings for Italy in 2009 as a costumed soccer game and fireworks. This link is given www.globeit.it/caf but since it is all in Italian and I don't see any options for an English translation, I was wondering if anyone can tell me more about this event. We would love to attend a soccer game while we are there, even if it is a costumed one I suppose! Can anyone tell me more about it (or give me the basics from the website I suppose?)?? Would it be worth checking out? We'll be in Florence for 2-3 days including the date of this event (the 24th).

Thanks for any help - I really appreciate everyone's input on these boards!

Do you already have hotel rooms? It sounds like the hotels will be fully booked during the event.

Thanks for the info - and yes we have booked our hotel room luckily!

:-)

So I take it we can just purchase tickets on the day of the event, right? It sounds like that is what you did on your page I think

I don't know if you have to buy a ticket to attend Calcio Storico. That page I sent you wasn't my homepage.

Ciao!

Travel Tips for Florence

Florence Tip

by Ekahau

Fondest memory of Florence: Italy is the extreme kindness of the people, and their willingness to communicate with me in a caring and sincere manner. The Hotel Albergo Pensione Centrale, my home was wonderfully located in the heart of Florence. The hotel staff knew each of us by our first names and their hospitality was impeccable.

The fifteen-minute walk each day took me across the Arno River that quietly divides the city of Florence. Along the way local artists would be working tediously at their easels. Wherever you turn in Florence, it is a feast for the eyes with most of the frescos, cathedrals and art, located on the north side of the river. Weekend group trips by bus and train transported us through the south of Florence where the hills are covered with vines and olive trees.

cat colony

by tompt

The people of Florence must love animals very much. While walking uphill to San Miniato al Monte, we stumbled upon this cat colony. The sign said it is feline colony 3.
We tried find something about it on the internet, but no luck sofar. If somebody knows more we are happy to hear it.

The Florentines had already...

The Florentines had already built the octagonal base for the dome before anyone knew how to span 140 feet using masonry alone. No metal was employed in the ingenious structural solution.* Two domes, one inner and one outer, were constructed using two shells, a three foot outer dome and twelve foot inner, in a herringbone patterned self-supporting masonry construction of cantilevered rings. Brunelleschi, 1436

*metal was used to tie the stones but no collossal metal rings as in Michelangelo's St Peters in Rome

Live music 1

by kenadams about Loonies

Not bad! On fridays and saturdays, this underground nightclub with live music tends to be too crowded, but it's ok.
Lots of local guys storm in on weekend nights looking for fresh foreign female flesh!
But on weeknights this place is really nice.
Have fun, but don't expect the drinks to be very good. casual

Excellent Steaks and pasta

by beesaj about Aqua 2

Wonderful and worth the cost. I followed a friends advice and went to this place.
They started the four of us with a 5 course pasta sampler, then they brought out a fat juice covered steak. call Balsmic Steak. UMMM. I loved the way this tasted and their wine combined with the meat was just wonderful. Balsmic Steak.
