Bicycle Tour

by edfisher

Viator tours offers a bicycle tour of the sights of Florence. Has anyone done it or thinks whether touring on a bicycle would be safe in Florence?

Re: Bicycle Tour

by cmcard2

Florence is a very walkable city. From the Duomo and St. Mary of the Flowers, it is easy to go to Palazza Vecchio, past the Uffizi, to the Ponte Vecchio, and go on to Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens.

Or you can choose to walk to Santa Croce from the Palazza Vecchio. The Bargello Museum is on the way.

The Accademia which houses the statue of David is in the opposite direction.

I cannot answer about the tour on a bicycle, but it makes sense that you can see a great deal that way, and it will not be too challenging.

A great city, and a lot to see that is within close prxomity!

Travel Tips for Florence

Amazing granita

by fgfi

If in Florence during summer you cannot miss Carabè, a gelateria held by a sicilian couple Antonio and Loredana. You will there found ice cream, cannoli, cassata, but the specialty is granita, a sort of smooth fruit flavoured water ice. Via Ricasoli, 60 (red), a few blocks from the Galleria dell'Accademia and Michelangelo's David.

San Gimignano city map (click...

by Sergiuz

San Gimignano city map (click to enlarge) clearly shows the essential urban framework, focused around Via S. Matteo (St. Matthew Street) and Via S. Giovanni (St. John Street) which both represent the main axes from which depart a multitude of collateral streets. Also typical of the town, and at a time revealing its origins, is its enclosure within solid defense walls.
Please note that San Gimignano City Council wisely applies a strict traffic limitation plan, so you're not allowed to enter the town by car, unless you're resident or just for loading/unloading procedures (temporary permits are available for this purpose). Numbered parking lots - some of them free of charge - are located outside the walls, all around them.

Sunset from Pallazio Michaelangelo

Therefore it is said that the whole universe is just an illusion, unless you immediately realize the vehicle of truth and attain the mystic path all at once, forgetting all about subject and object, arriving at basic unminding, seeing through worldly troubles, understanding gangs of devils. If you effectively understand this, it will make you happy for life. If you still don’t understand, it’s just because you yourselves are avoiding it.

Calcio and the Simpsons

by cpiers47 about Joshua Tree Pub, Fiddler's Elbow

I'd been in Florence for a month before realizing that "The Simpsons Bar" was actually called the Fiddler's Elbow. The drink of choice is anything Irish and the the big screen TV in the back room is tuned to "The Simpsons" (in English) at 7:30 every night. The locals stay in the front and watch soccer/football/calcio and the American students all head for the back. Don't try the food - it's not worth it! But, it is a nice bar with two very different sets of customers!
