In comparison to other rooms we had in Italy (Venice & Rome), the room we had at the Palazzo Ricasoli was larger with a larger bathroom. It was almost like a tiny effiency apartment with a small couch, stove and fridge. We appreciated having a shower since our previous hotel room only had a bathtub. On the downside, we also got mosquito bites since we left our window open. The breakfast could be improved upon and it could be quite a long walk to the other parts of the city, overall, this was my favorite hotel in Italy (even though we didn't get a room with a view!) As an added plus, it's very close to a laundrymat.
Close to college campus so the area looks a bit rough around the edges.
In the sprawling hills of Tuscany, outside Florence, lies the 14th century castle, Il Pilagio. The afternoon spent there gives true meaning to the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun". It was a beautiful sunny day in the hills and from the castle you could see for miles the farmland, vineyards and olive groves. We toured the wine cellar filled with rows upon rows of wine barrels and casks. We were entertained in the "old grainery" with a wine tasting party that exceeds all others I have attended. Wonderful cheeses, crackers and bruschetta accompanied the many wines for sampling. We found the variety and price of their wines very attractive and purchased bottles to take home.
The castle was in excellent condition, amazing for such an old building. Photo opportunities were around every corner. The staff was friendly and very accomodating to us. This wine tasting party was one of the highlights of my 17 day trip thoughout Tuscany.
