Photography

Is photography permitted in the major museums and in any of the historic churches and basillicas? I have an Eyewitness Guide which says whats permiited where. However, LOL, its nearly 15 years old. So its impossible to go by. Time for a new edition.

Re: Photography

by leics

It depends. Some allow it, some don't. Most places (rightly) at least have restrictions on flash, which is extremely damaging to old things.

Be guided by the signs at each place: they will be there!

And yes....get a new guidebook! :-)

Haha, thanks leic.

Re: Photography

I know in the Accademia photography is not permitted. I'm not sure about the Uffizi.

Re: Photography

by Roadquill

the Accadamia (sp?) where David is housed prohibits photography and I have been told by friends that they have seen security take peoples cameras away who have clicked and been caught. Karl

Re: Photography

But that is what VT is for, so we look forward to seeing your trip report and photos here too.

Re: Photography

by susancs

You cannot take pictures in the Accademia or Uffizi. There are people is every room telling you no photos. There were people snapping shots of "David" on cell phones and sneaking shots on their cameras, (but not without the embarrassment of being yelled at). I took a shot of "David" with the "museum" setting on my camera which has no flash or sound...I did have to hide behind some people to avoid being caught with my camera out.

I took many photos in the Duomo and Santa Maria Novella, not a problem.

To clarify, my post above was aimed at someone who persisted in advertising his own website. It has been deleted.

Re: Photography

Bummer about the Uffizi. In older edition of Rick Steves, he said photography without flash is permitted. But in the new one, now he says even without flash its not permitted. I guess they want to sell more post cards.

Re: Photography

by Roadquill

Even the Prado in Madrid no longer allows photography even sin flash. Just a few years ago you could click but not flick at will. Karl

Re: Photography

by leics

Rather than it being anything to do with selling more postcards I suspect they are entirely fed up with the continual stream of ignorant people who persist in using flash, which seriously damages works of art (that's why museum lighting is always special, and church lighting of such things very dim).

Didn't matter so much before the myriad of digitals and phone cameras existed.

Easier to ban photography altogether than to continually hear people say (lie) 'O gosh, I'm so sorry....I forgot to turn off the flash'.

Re: Photography

by roamer61

I can understand where paintings are concerned. But what I don't understand is where sculpture is concerned. I just learned that photography is not permitted even in the Bargello and Medici Chapels. Can anyone shed light on this?

Re: Photography

by leics

It isn't just paintings: tapestries, frescoes, room decorations and anything which involves pigment can be damaged by excessive light exposure.

However, even if such things are not present in a particular area/room, it is easier to have a blanket ban on either a) flash or b) all photography. Too many people treat the whole thing as a game, because they are ignorant (at least, I hope it is because they are ignorant of potential damage rather than that they do not care if they cause any).

Travel Tips for Florence

a little bit of history

by margaretvn

One of my favourite artists is Michelangelo (born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, [Italy], he died on Feb. 18, 1564 in Rome)Actually to be more precise Michelagnolo Buonarroti. He was considered the greatest living artist in his lifetime, and ever since he has been held to be one of the greatest artists of all times. Several of his works - paintings, sculpture and architecture are among the most famous in the world. These works include the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican which are probably one of the best known of his works today. Michelangelo, himself though considered himself first and foremost a Sculptor. In his lifetime it was not unusual to practice several types of art if all of them were based on design or drawing. Michelangelo worked in marble sculpture all his life and in the other arts only at certain periods. The high regard for the Sistine ceiling is partly a reflection of the greater attention paid to painting in the 20th century and partly due to the fact that it was completed during his life, unlike many of the artist's works in the other materials.

SHOES!

Bring tennies...the most comfortable ones you have. You will walk everywhere, unless you rent a bike or a moped. If you are a photographer, you're in heaven in florence. I recommend a lot of film.

Fabulous Eats and Shoots

by ForestqueenNYC about Mercato Centrale

The Mercato Centrale is not only a wonderful place to pick up fresh produce, meats, fish, oils, herbs and spices, but it is so colorful and full of life that there are incredible opportunities for some very creative photoshoots.

You can also eat at the little restaurants in the Mercato where you will find regional home cooking.

Serenaded in the Tuscan hills

by CJD68 about La Certosa

A charming 16th Century building set in the scenic Tuscan hills. Besides good food and an outdoor terrace, enjoy a opera singer to serenade you and some mood music from a pianist. Start with a glass of Campari, then on to a typical Tuscan meal and washed down with the local Chianti.
