sculpture of a man and a woman
by raysgirl
I visited the museum in Florence recently and saw DAVID. It was magnificent, but I was more taken with a sculpture nearby of a man and women embracing. I bought a replica. The replica has no name posted on it. I would like to know if it has a name and also who the artist was. I thought I saw a sign near it that said, "Daphne and Chloe" but can't find that anywhere in my searches. Please help!!

there were some unfinished works of michelangelo when you entered and walked down the aisle toward the statue of david in the accademia - believe there were 3 of them - i am not sure what was on the left - perhaps the ones you make mention of - sure someone will be able to give you the answer

nah - they are all the unfinished prisoners of michealangelos - no embraces among them
i was there last month and the accademia is quite small and I just can't think what this poster is meaning
unless there is another david in another museum
or unless she was in the piazza where the replica is - plenty of statues there

Or maybe it is Amor and Psyche. It's the main photo on my Rome page but it won't be the same as the sculpture mentioned.
Daphne and Chloe would be two women! :-)

Daphnis and Chloe maybe

If in the same room of the David, it could be:
Ulisse Cambi (author)
Dafne e Cloe, 1834
Cat.Gen G.A.M, n. 740
Look here for a directory of the all that is in display:

thanks Francesco! I followed your link to polomuseale but couldn't open either of the two for Ulisse Cambi, one of which was Dafne e Cloe. Tried the polomuseale search engine but it didn't bring up anything new.
Anyway, I never knew that Daphne was a female name, a nymph in mithology apparently. thanks Anke Thea. I only had a vague idea about the lovers Daphnis and Chloe, first one a male goat keeper, second a female, a keeper too (of goats or sheep, I don't know.) This gets too complicated now...
The OP didn't return with more info, probably busy with New Year arriving. Same here now, I'm going to focus on the bubbles in the sparkling wine. Good luck to the OP.
Happy New Year to everyone!
Travel Tips for Florence

by margaretvn
Go and see the real David in the Galleria dell'Accademia. One of my favourite memories linked with Florence is about the David. I love the statue David and to keep me happy until I could see the original Koos bought me a small copy. He stood on the coffee table by us at home but every time my parents came to visit us my mum turned the statue so that he had his back to her!! I remember standing in front to the large original David and thinking -how would Mum turn this statue - and laughing.
This is a stolen photo (taken illegally in the Galleria!!!)
Santa Maria Maggiore
by croisbeauty
The church was erected in the 11th century on the site of an pagan temple dedicated to Giunone and Vesta. The first document of its existance, however, dates back to 1159. The church was completed in the 13th century becoming, at that time, one of the richest and most important in Firenze.
The church has Latin Cross plan and one nave only which gave it impression of majestic spaciousness. There are many chapels inside of church adorned with important works of art.
Fresh Pasta
by RoarTheLion about Mercato Centrale
There is a fresh pasta shop in the Mercato Centrale. It is to die for. We've got these spinach and ricotta ravioli twice and there is nothing better. They also have homemade sauses and cut their fresh egg pastas as you order it. They have a preperation room which is open by windows to the public eye and you can see the whole production taking place. We had a great time watching them make the ravioli. The price is fairly resonable. If you go on Tuesday they have a special price on the ravioli for almost half the price. Granted you have to have a place to cook them but if you are staying in a hostel or appartment it works out great. 1 kg is about 7-8 euros (the picture shows about 1/3 kilo). On Tuesday get the ravioli for 5 euros a kg. This even rivals the supermarket price for the prepacked assortments which go for around 8 euros a kg and are not that flavorful.

We took the Artesia train from Paris, it was overnight and very comfortable, for 33 Euros plus our Eurail for a 4 seater coupe with wine and breakfast too! There is also a couchette with 6 people for much cheaper but a little stuffy, like the Indian trains :)
This picture is as you get out of Santa Maria Novella station.
La Giostra Chef
by Jmill42 about La Giostra
La Giostra means "carousel" in Italian, and the restaurant was named that because the building used to house carousels for a nearby carnival. It is no longer for children, but the place is amazingly fun because of the owner, Prince Dimitri. Yes, he is a TRUE Habsburg prince from Austria! He is the night’s entertainment, as he goes around and regales you with stories from his past and of the restaurant. The walls have photos of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and other famous persons who have stopped in for his wonderful food. A definitive MUST EAT restaurant for Florence. Carbonara di tartufo - spaghetti with chunks of truffles.
