Apartments in Florence region

by thomtony

Does anyone have suggestions about an apartment for 2 people in the Florence region (outside the city) with good access to public transport? We will be arriving from Australia in early September and hope to stay for a week before moving on to Pisa.

It would also be very useful if there were at least basic grocery shopping within walking distance.

There are umpteen sites available if you google 'apartments florence'.

Unless you have a hire car which you wish to park, you would be far better off staying within easy walking distance of the historical centre, not least because you will be much more easily able to access train and bus to explore other nearby towns such as Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca etc. Pisa, by the way, is only an hour by train from Florence: a very easy daytrip.

Central historical Florence is partially pedestrianised and, in common with many other European cities, there are plenty of people living within it.

Fiesole is lovely, a 15-minute or so bus ride in and out, but I think you will find grocery shopping pretty limited. Better to shop in Florence and take goods back on the bus.

If you are looking to stay outside of Florence, then is this because you want to see something of the Chianti countryside? If so, rent a car for the week. That way you can do day trips into Florence and Siena and spend the rest of the time cruising the Chianti Hills, going to lovely wineries and visiting all the lovely hill-top towns that make Chianti so beautiful.

I stayed at a nice apartment in the Oltrano part of Florence. It is outside the tourist center and there is a grocery store about a block away. If you are interested, you can check out my Florence tips or email me.

Yes, Oltrano (the 'other' side of the river Arno from the main Duomo area) is a good place to stay, I think.

Hi!,
Another good area to visit Florence, staying away from traffic, but close to the center, is "Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, halfway between Siena and Florence.
"Sole del Chianti" is a beautiful structure, but perhaps not very economical.
Try to have a look anyway and let us know!

Hi!

Last year I was in Florence with my boyfriend and we were looking for something cheap and in the centre. I found a company that rent apartments for few days (we were there for 3 days during an Italy tour). We stayed ina very nice apartment near the Basilica de Santa Maria del Fiore, very furnished and romantic!

The price was good, but we swent on september /(and I suggest you not to go on agoust because it's incredibly hot!).

The company's calles Visit All the World, the link is visitalltheworld.com. Really, we had a great time and I can't complain about anything.

Hope to be helpful and have a nice trip!!

Travel Tips for Florence

Traveling Light in Italy/Europe.

by GuitarStan

I can't stress this enough, TRAVEL LIGHT! My wife was extremely concerned when I planned this trip for carry-on luggage only. We spent 2 weeks in Italy, one simply can't pack enough clothes and carry them through train stations, up and down stairs, through crowded streets and so forth! We bought a $14.00 hair blower, bought toiletries and bought 1 cheap suitcase (which you can find in any flea market) to bring home souvenirs, we checked this bag in on the way home. After about 3 days in Italy my wife said we still packed too much, we found a laundromat and washed our clothes or washed them in our room. She thought this was a crazy idea before we left but, she saw the light when we observed many tourist's struggling with way too much luggage especially in train stations (which are large). Some of these people had 3 large bags a person and were not having fun! We each had 1 backpack and 1 rucksack...Lean and Clean.

SANTA CROCE CHURCH

This...

SANTA CROCE CHURCH

This beautiful black & white church is the final resting place of Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo amongst many others. The facade and bell tower only date back to the last century, but the church itself was begun at the end of the XIIIth century. Don't miss the numerous chapels, particularly the Cappella Peruzzi and the Cappella Bardi with their Giotto Frescoes, with Brunelleschi´s Cappella dei Pazzi being considered one of his finest works.

Fiesole II

by m-joy

The view from Fiesole down on Florence is amazing! Apart from a few cafes at the Piazza Mino da Fiesole, in which you can sit outside and have a brilliant view down, the way up to the little church Sant’ Alessandro is the best option.

Avoiding owercrowded streets

by croisbeauty about Exploring Firenze during the night

Crowded streets and sights might be very exhausted when exploring the town, especially in the hot summer days. Sometimes you can hardly walk through endless mass of people. If you're not affraid of dark (Firenze is very safe town even during the night), I suggest you to explore the town after the midnight. You might discovered something you'll never seen during the day time.

negative experience at a Florence restaurant

by Janfortado about Trattoria da Benvenuto

The food was fine, but we had a bizarre experience that we really wanted to share. There were four of us traveling together - two couples - in September. We are always cordial at restaurants. For two weeks we had wonderful dining experiences in Italy - except for one. The waiter at Trattoria da Benvenuto in Florence did not realize that one of us could see him as he spoke to a customer in the reataurant, a customer he seemed to know. The waiter made demeaning gestures aimed at us and would whisper in the customer's ear (very demeaning). The look on his face as he whispered and made gestures led us to believe he continued to make fun of us in some way. There was ABSOLUTELY no reason for him to do this. We wondered if the waiter did not like Americans for some reason. If he had had a bad experience with an American, we were extremely polite so he had no reason to be so insulting to us. We were really unhappy when we left this restaurant and would not want another American to experience what we did. tenderloin of beef with mushrooms
