Standing up at the bar
by mariocibelli
While found in the rest of Italy, the concept of standing at the bar is more the rule in Florence. This is part due to the spatial problem in many Florence cafes and bars, it also has to do a bit with the culture.
Generally most bars and cafes offer two tarrifs for standing and sitting. It is generally NOT worth the 200% markup to sit down, mainly because the service you get is not inline with the price difference.
There are many cafes and bars that do not charge to sit down, I am n0t writing them down here, but just try and pay attention when you are there, they are generally smaller and look like they have seen better days.
It is NEVER worth it to pay 5 Euros for a cappuccino!
Often times, when you are a regular in a bar/caffe, you get out of paying the higher rate, so oft times loyalty does pay off. If you do frequent a place quite a bit and don't notice the service getting better the more you go, you might consider going elsewhere.
Badia Fiesolana
by fgfi
The Badia Fiesolana was the cathedral church of Fiesole until the 11th century, after which the monastery was turned over to the Benedictines. During the Renaissance, the abbey was enlarged and rebuilt. In the faqade of the church, which was never quite completed, you can still see the light and dark stones of the old Romanesque faqade. The interior is appointed in the style of Brunelleschi. To the right of the church is the entrance to the former convent.
The Badia Fiesolana, is the main building of the European University Institute (EUI) in San Domenico.

Good value
by Rodlipscombe about Trattoria Casalinga
This is a very popular restaurant in the Oltrarno area. The reason for its popularity is not hard to discover. It serves good food at, for Florence, very reasonable prices.
You may have to queue for a table, but don't let that put you off - it is a sign that they hit the right spot.
The only down side is that your secondi could well arrive as soon as you finish your primi. Go hungry, as the portions are good.
Expect to pay about 25 Euros per person - including wine. Everything is well done, but I particularly liked the pasta with wild boar sauce. The steaks are also very good. The also offer a good selection of cheeses to finish, if you don't want a sweet.
The house wine is very acceptable.
