La Pietra Grezza, Rignano Sull Arno,: Outstanding apartment in Tuscany + B&B

by Sainteamonn

We have rented holiday homes in Ireland, England and France, but our stay with Alberto and Donatella in their Hunting Lodge in the Tuscan hills was sheer delight. Our German Shepherd came with us and Alberto did the "dog sitting" while we explored Florence, Siena, Pisa and the lovely Arezzo. But we discovered that history and the riches of Italian culture were right on our doorstep at Bisticci - and no queues: Caccia, Figline, Voldarno were brimming with the art and architecture of the Risorgimento. No shortage of excellent, country restaurants - Alberto's guidance never failed.
We so enjoyed the apartment we stayed "home" on many days - Leisurely breakfast on our own terrace, stunning views down the valley, and the birds thronging in the trees in the ravine below us. We could hear the wild boar, smell the pines, sip the Tignanello a delicious blend of Sangiovese and cabernet grapes; it was almost a chore to struggle off the loungers and go down the mountain for lunch. When the weather really warmed up, the apartment remained cool: large rooms, thick walls and very high ceilings provided a perfect refuge.

The apartment is a floor of the hunting lodge which is built into the hillside. On three levels, each one with its own terrace, there is excellent privacy. The second apartment was the "Bed and Breakfast" unit, and was an excellent stop for trekkers crossing the Tuscan hills.
For dog owners the dog "garden", usually occupied by Alberto's dogs, is available to enable trips out while the dog can remain in a cool, and very extensive, secure enclosure. All under the watchful eye of the indefatigable Alberto.
How many holidays provide the perfect "uncle" - knowledgeable, helpful, discreet and so capable.
The approach to Bisticci is up a very tortuous, steep hill, not a problem if taken at a steady pace and after the second approach tackled with the aplomb of a local.
There is a good bus service from the bottom of the hill - where there is also a good car park- into the centre of Florence. But across the valley from Bisticci, visit and enjoy a genuine Masaccio - in a little parish church, just sit alone and contemplate this treasure of the 14th Century master.
Promise not to tell anyone else about this little bit of heaven.

Palazzo a Merse: Great B&B in Nature S/E of Siena

by rubbersoul75

We stayed 3 nights at this B&B and were extremely pleased. Andrea & his family are great hosts and they provided us with helpful info on local sights & itineraries. Palazzo a Merse is a perfect option if you are looking for an apartment set up. We stayed in the large "Margherita", 2 bedrooms, living room with fireplace heater, and large kitchen. Breakfast was served in the families kitchen a few doors down.

If you are traveling with a car, the location is convienient for day-trips to Siena, San Galgano, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, Monte Oliveto Maggiore, etc.

They produce thier own Olive Oil that you can sample/purchase.

Andrea is an avid bicyclist and is a strong proponent for biking in the area. He has worked on putting together wonderful maps and itineraries for biking in the surrounding Tuscan Countryside. You can rent bicycles here, and they also offers package tours for bike trips. Andrea knows the roads/trails very well and can also suggest an itinerary specific to your desires.

Monsignor della Casa: Superb Villa Accomodations Near Florence

by ghothem

Monsignor della Casa is a very high quality, reasonably priced country resort about 18 miles north of Florence in Borgo San Lorenzo. We recently stayed for a week in one of their villa accomodations. Our villa, La Tania, was 2 side-by-side "townhomes" with a connecting door. Our party of 6 adults rented both sides and it worked out fabulously. Both sides were identical. Both has two bedrooms and a large bathroom upstairs with a kitchen, large full bathroom, dining area and living area downstairs. The accomodations were first class with all necessary cooking supplies, dishes, etc. We prepared dinner twice in the villa and were want for nothing.

The resort contains various types of accomodations from rooms with ensuite bathrooms to a 12-person villa. Also on-site are a very delightful restaurant (breakfast and dinner), a wine bar, large exercise room and 3 swimming pools. Everything was clean, well appointed and maintained in a first class condition. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and arranged several events in Florence for us. They all speak English very fluently among a number of other languages.

Our cost for the 4 bedroom villa was 1600 Euro for the week, which we thought was a true bargain compared to other accomodations we considered. Monsignor della Casa is located in the Mugello valley north of Florence and is still to be discovered by many foreigners. We assume this is part of the reason for the reasonable rates. The area is beautiful with rolling hills and mountains to both the north and the south. The resort is located about 3 miles north of town and is extremely quiet being located in rolling farmland and forests. An automoblie is defintely required.

Everyone in our group gave this resort "5 Stars"!

Their website is www.monsignore.com. The photos on the website are accurate, and if anything, the actual resort is better than the photos.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions I might be able to answer.

- Great views of surrounding mountains
- Large open areas throughout the resort
- Fire wooded provided for fireplaces (we had a fire every night while sipping wine)

Casa Portagioia: Tuscany's Best B&B / Agritourismo

by wilfilius

My husband and I just returned from a marvelous trip to Italy. If your Italian travels include Tuscany, the one place you should not miss is Casa Portagioia. The Tuscan setting is spectacular; Casa Portagioia is in a peaceful valley just outside the Tuscan community of Castilion Fiorentino. The lodgings, as well as all the facilities, are immaculate with attention to detail evident everywhere. In fact, the pictures posted on the web site – www.tuscanbreaks.com – are unable to fully convey the beauty of Casa Portagioia. [Be careful if you do a google search for Casa Portagioia. Instead of finding the Agritourismo/B&B, you will be directed to booking agencies.]

Terry and Marcello are marvelous hosts--fun to be around [but never intrusive], full of helpful knowledge and insights about Tuscany, and very welcoming. They have that special gift of making guests feel like family. And, as if all this were not enough, Marcello is an excellent chef. We enjoyed one of Marcello’s Saturday night dinners, and it was one of the best dinners of our trip. His homemade fruit tart [actually more a torte] with marscapone sauce was to-die-for. Plus, his daily breakfasts were wonderful–complete with a bountiful assortment of fresh fruit, choice of cereals, delicious breads, freshly cooked eggs, yogurt, juice, and the best-ever-coffee with all the refills of coffee one could desire.

Thanks to Terry and Marcello’s graciousness, hospitality, sense of humor and hard work, we had a wonderful time during our October 2006 stay at their beautiful, and aptly named, Casa Portagioia. The only thing that could have improved our stay was better planning on my part. Instead of the few days we reserved, we should have booked Casa Portagioia for our entire Tuscan vacation. Next time we will!

Casa Portagioia is a beautifully restored Tuscan estate, complete with a pool that offers panoramic views. In fact, the all the views of the Valle di Chio are spectacular--heavenly sunsets, peaceful valley, beautiful foothills.

Hotel Il Cigno: Northern Tuscany - Secluded Hotel

by sue_stone

Hotel Il Cigno is located in the middle of nowhere! Hidden away in northern Tuscany, near the tiny village of Covigliaio, it is certainly not the easiest place to find. It is located about 20 kms from the A1, via the famous Passo della Futa (windy road made famous by motorcycle races).

The four star hotel is located at the end of a narrow road which winds down into the valley for a couple of kilometres. There is a sign at the top of the road pointing down to the hotel, but it is easy to miss....

Anyway, once you eventually find it, you will be glad you made the effort. It is a lovely place, sitting on the edge of the valley, with lovely rural views. We received a friendly greeting on arrival and were given direction to our room.

There are 31 rooms all up, all with a private entrance and small terrace at the front in a garden setting. Rooms were nicely decorated and I was very impressed with our bathroom, in particular the large walk-in shower.

The hotel has a decent restaurant which serves up local cuisine....lucky as there is no where else nearby to eat! Breakfast was served on the (covered in) veranda, which offers some nice views over the valley.

The hotel has a pool and there are some great walks leading down into the valley.
This is a very relaxing place to get away from it all. Our room (with breakfast) cost 95 euro.

Tenuta Quadrifoglio: A really nice place in Tuscany

by rgrau

Very nice pool, overlooking great views!

Fattoria La Muraglia: Agriturismo Just North of Siena

by rubbersoul75

Great location just off the Florence - Siena superstrada. They've got a number of rooms, as far as Agriturismo's go, so it is not as intimate as some farm stays. That worked for us, we needed 2 rooms anyway. La Muraglia operates more like a hotel, in that you can stay just one night (other agriturismos, require minimum a few days to a week). They DO NOT prepare meals. Really nice, big pool, very peaceful setting. Check out the website. The older couple that run it where great.

The "agriculture" they run are their vineyards. A very decent grade Chianti Colli Senesi. Also a lower quality white made from the same grapes as Vernaccia di San Gimignano which is 40 minutes north. You can of course taste the wines and purchase on site.

I imagine we'll stay here again the next time we head to Siena.

pool, peacfull setting in the vinyards, but convenient to the highway and Siena.

"La Speranza": Agriturismo

by sikorka

It was our first time in this agriturismo, I've found it while searching on the net at the last minute so I didn't expect a lot, but it came over my expectation.
The location is great, close to the shore 25km, lots of great views, long bike trails, a pool, a grill place and very nice owners. Would you like more?
We went there in 4, so we had an apartment (2 bedroom +kitchen+ 1 bathroom) all for us for the total price 120 E. Breakfast is not included as long as you have kitchen where you can prepare it.
We went by bike to the nearest supermarket 3km to get some stuff for breakfast.
Nothing to add I really have fun there!!!

Loding in the Monasteries and Convents

by rubbersoul75

As most of the monasteries and convents in Italy are at much lower capacity than they used to be, many open up their rooms & kitchen to all visitors. We've stayed at convents in Italy on 4 different occasions; it has always been a pleasant experience. Clean, good food, and affordable!

There are numerous locations available throughout Tuscany, in the cities and also countryside. What you need to know is that many have curfews (around 11 p.m.) because they close the doors at night and of course you need to respect the fact that it is a religious institution.

If that works with you, Here’s how to investigate further:
The vast majority of convents/monasteries throughout Italy are not on the internet; on-line booking is almost non-existent though that is slowly starting to change.

The alternative is to call and book; some speak English and the books I'll list will tell you what language is spoken. Here are the only valuable books I've found on the subject and they're both good (check your library):

- Bed and Blessings Italy: A Guide to Convents and Monasteries Available for Overnight Lodging

- The Guide to Lodging in Italy's Monasteries, Second Edition (Paperback)

The 1st book has a better layout, the 2nd is more thorough. There's also a guide in the book translating how to make a reservation in Italian that you can call or fax in.

Agriturismo il Romito: Agriturismo between Cortona & Arezzo

by rubbersoul75

This Agriturismo is extremely difficult to find, and the road leading to it is steep, narrow, and turns to dirt. Even with the GPS, we needed to call for assistance, and the gracious host met us and led us to the farm.

That’s the negative. The positive is that because of the remoteness, you get a genuine farm stay experience, with completely new/modern apartment, at a great price (35 euro per person).

There are 2, spacious 2 bedroom apartments with kitchen available here. The property has all types of animals, vegetables, fruit trees, olive orchards, etc. Also an above ground pool on the property. You can opt to have dinner with the family/other guests which we did- wonderful cooking with all ingredients, meat, wine, etc from their farm. 15 Euro extra for a true feast.

You can reserve in English through the web site (below), however the owners do not speak English.

Truly authentic Tuscan farm stay experience.
