Rail Travel Livorno to Florence/return
by bobnicholls
I am on a cruise docking at LIVORNO on the 16th May 2011 at approx 9a.m.
My question is:- My party of 4 adults want to go by train to FLORENCE to see the sights of the city, returning back to Livorno for approx 4.p.m
From which Livorno railway station do we depart?
Approximately how much is the return fare per adult?
How frequently are the trains each way?
Many thanks
R Nicholls (Mr)

Hy,
1)the railstation to Florence is Livorno Centrale, the main one
2)the return fare is 15.40€ in 2nd class, 20.20 in 1st.
3)there is a train every hour both from Livorno and Florence. The time trip is around 1.20.
Timetables and fares here: http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html, but you can't buy tickets now because it's too early..
Ciao, Marco

You don't need to buy tickets online at all. This is not a reservation-only route (few of those in Europe), and trains cannot get full-up. If there are no seats, which is pretty unlikely, you simply stand until seats become available.
Just buy your tickets at the station from the ticket machine (they have English language options). Use cash to avoid potential hassle with 'foreign' cards.
My preferred link for train times, details and fares is
http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html
One-way fare from Livorno Centrale to Florence Santa Maria Novella (SMN) is 6.70euro one-way. No need to buy first-class unless you really want to...there is little difference between first and second class, the latter is perfectly safe and comfortable enough for a short journey.
Also, no need to buy a return ticket. It costs the same as two one-way tickets, so just buy your ticket back to Livorno when you are at SMN (which is, by the way,. about 10 minutes walk from the Duomo).
Journey time is around 1h 22m. Trains are roughly hourly....with luck you will catch the 1010 (arr 1132).
Remember to validate (date-stamp) your ticket before boarding the train, using the yellow machines on the platforms. There are on-the-spot fines for no-validation and guards do check.
If you want to visit the Uffizi or Accademia you would be sensible to book your tickets in advance to save wasting time in queues (which can be very long indeed). Official online ticketing here;

Imo, with the limited amount of time you have, Pisa would be the better option. It's closer to Livorno, about a half hour away. Check the timetable for the trains at trenitalia.com and click on English.

As you are limited for time it may be worth bearing in mind that I think that it is a bit of a journey from the port to the train station. As far as I am aware it will need to be a bus journey or a taxi.
Pisa is quite nice but Florence would get my vote, even though your time will be limited.
Enjoy!

this is our typical drink during winter at night, best place to have it is at Bar Civili, pretty close to the train station

fortress along the canals

Hey the red building u see on the right, used to be a fortress in ancient times to defend Livorno by the invasors
nowadays there is a park inside the fortress and it hosts a music festival with punk-hardcord-rock bands during the whole summer
it's a great atmoshere inside, nice people, very laid back
there's no place in Livorno for snobs!
Big moment!

I took my shoes off and put the feet into the Mediterranean for the very first time!
They appreciated it very much indeed.
Because, oh, how my feet suffered in Italy.
Take at least one other pair of feet with you because you will walk and walk and walk until the feet tell you to stop.
Stop, Jen. Stop right now. I can't do it anymore.
Then I went up the track again because the people obviously think it is their private beach. Difficult track, stony shore. If I hadn't spotted the hunk in speedos I would never have known about it.
Sonnino Castle
by randychiara
hey
that castle is Sonnino, from which the beach gets the name
the beach is down the cliff, very isolated, but all the young locals go there by a path
if u happen to be here in Livorno, just ask any young people, they will show u the way!!
