Little gem

This is a charming old fashioned Italian Hotel, tucked away from the main road. Not modern or luxurious, but very comfortable. We stayed there for several nights for a family get together and everyone enjoyed it.
The owner is lovely, but unfortunately it is his less than charming son who speaks English.

Unique Quality: If you travel in Italy by car you will know how hard it is to park in towns and cities. This solved our problem, the hotel provides a space a 3euro a day. It is just off the main seafront road so easy to get to. Being tucked behind the seafront buildings makes it very quiet in a noisy town, so you get to sleep. We were able to walk to almost anywhwere in Livorno from here.
The booking form on the web site is spasmodic so a phone call or e.mail is better.

Post office near cruise port?

by aznaphrodite

I'd like to mail some postcards to our families during our Med cruise next week. Does anyone know of a post office (or place I can buy postage & mail postcards) in Livorno that is walkable from the port?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Post office near cruise port?

The Central Post Office in Livorno is at

Via Cairoli 12/16

If you put

ufficio postale Livorno italy

into google maps you can see exactly where each one is on the town streetmap. I think

Via delle Cateratte

may be nearest ('G' on google map) but it all depends where your ship berths.

Thanks for your response to both my topics, leics!!

You can buy stamps as well as postcards in every tobacco store in Italy. Just look for white T on a black background signs which identify a "Tabacchi" place. There are plenty all over the city center. Many bars have their tobacco corner as well. You can drop your mail in the "Poste Italiane" red boxes hanging on the streets, very often located just outside tobacco stores.

Thank you, Noel! Those will probably be easier to find throughout my tour then.

Yes, you can buy stamps in tabacchi. But make sure you know exactly what type of stamp you need, or have the Italian to ask for it (you are more likely to find someone who speaks good English in a Post Office, in my experience).

It might be worth learning the Italian for 'A stamp for 'x' country, please' beforehand.

Travel Tips for Livorno

Living statue in Livorno

by craic

She definitely wasn't up to the standard of the living statues in Genoa. Some of them were works of art.
But she had made an effort. Borrowed her little sister's dolly to be the infant Jesus.
She was doing the sitting-very-still thing.
She was the only living statue I saw in Livorno.
So I dropped some money into her basket.
Suddenly her hand moved and she gave me a slip of paper.
She was wearing purple fluffy woollen gloves!
It gave me quite a turn.
It appeared the slip of paper blessed me in the name of the Virgin Mary and gave me my lucky number. I think it was 9.

The police arrived ...

by craic

... the old gent who had been riding the vespa in the first accident turned up, on his feet, looking sprightly.
Bit of a palaver. Everyone was quite cool.
The girls drove the car to the side of the road and the police made chalk marks around the body of the vespa.
I have no idea who was in the wrong.
One got the impresion though that it was the old gent on the vespa.
Maybe his reaction time had slowed down.
Speedy reactions are the trick to staying alive on Italian roads.

Mercato Centrale and the main canal

by maykal

Behind Piazza della Repubblica, the main canal re-appears and turns a corner, where the buildings alongside it become much grander and more impressive as you near the sea. One of the grandest buildings is the large Mercato Centrale, a three story dark brownish pile in between lots of yellow buildings. The canal is one of the more active waterways in the city, with many small boats going back and forth. What I'd like to know is...do the boats carry on under the piazza-cum-bridge?
