Too hot in August?

by Megcamley

I had been hoping to come to Lucca for a couple of weeks in August, but am concerned it may be too hot at this time of year, after hearing that local business' sometimes close for the month of August due to the heat.
Also being inland and not benefitting from a sea breeze, does it get really humid?
My kids are fair skinned.
Any advice welcome.

We don't know where you are from, so it's difficult to tell you if it will be too hot.

Look at for monthly averages for Lucca. You will see that the average high in August is 83F (28C) and the average low is 62F (17C). Depending on where you are coming from, this can be delightful weather.

Generally, it will be warm to hot during the day, and cool off in the evening, especially away from the city.

The local businesses close because of a long-standing tradition in Italy in which everyone used to stop what they were doing and take the month of August off. One reason they did this was because August was the only time of year in which it is warm enough to sit on a beach and swim in the sea...Well, I am exaggerating, but not by much. Yes, it is warm in August, but it is not so hot that you can't function.

Note that tourist places are normally open - this is when all the tourists come.

The biggest problem that foreigners have in August is the air-conditioning...either there isn't any (why spend the money for 2 months a year?) or it is underpowered compared to what they are used to.

Consider renting an apartment that has AC. As McCalpin says there are not many AC'ed places and it is usually underpowered but it might help you sleep better. I am renting this place in June and it has AC - a rarity in Lucca.

Travel Tips for Lucca

No traffic and lots of bicycles

by micas_pt

Lucca is a "traffic free" city. Fortunately cars are limited at the entrance of the historic centre and visitors must choose between walking and pedaling. A lot of visitors and locals were riding their bicycles and there are specific places near the main must sees to park the rented bicycles.

There are a few exceptions, and in fact we came across some vehicles, most of them performing tasks that I assume were ordered by the City Hall. So while browsing Lucca's narrow and cobbled streets keep aware as you may come across some vehicles, although this situation is not too frequent (and drivers are usually driving very slowly due to pedestrians and also due to narrow streets).

Pisa is not a off the beaten path destination, on the contrary, it is too touristy. But it is very near to Lucca, about 20km so I guess it is worth a visit if you have some spare time and enjoy that kind of place. No need to say what is a must see in Pisa: the leaning tower, the duomo, the baptistery and the cemetery.

Pisa is not my cup of tea: I found it too touristy, mainly because we visited during peak season (July). But we spent a pleasant evening there and visiting the leaning tower at night was a nice surprise, while enjoying my delicious Italian ice cream on a hot summer night. Actually, a lot of other visitors were doing the same and enjoying the green grass to sit and talk.

A typical "trattoria" in town.

by illudiumqh36 about Trattoria Da Leo

It is a family-maneged "trattoria", with a very warm atmosphere... once I had a lunch beside the owner's nephew just came back from school!!!
In spring and summer it's possible to have lunch in some tables outside the restaurant in a narrow and quiet street (obvously in no-car area!!!).
They serve very traditional dishes as "Tordelli al sugo", "Farro", "Arista" and many more. Tordelli al sugo

Church Visit

by gemmarlv

The church of San Michele in Foro

The church is mentioned for the first time in 795 as ad foro (in the forum). It was rebuilt after 1070 by will of Pope Alexander II. Notable is the façade, from the 13th century, with a large series of sculptures and inlays, numerous of which remade in the 19th century.

Very pretty church and nice to drop bye. Supposedly St. Michael the Arch-Angel (statue on top) is supposed to be wearing a gold ring. I looked but could not find one.

The Streets...

by coceng

Via Fillungo is the busiest street in Lucca which threads through the heart of the old city !
The streets in Lucca within the walls are just so beautiful !
there are streets with lots of shops & restaurants but I chose not to take those photos/sights. Instead this quiet street/path among the houses.
It sorts of hark back in time for me !
