Late night public transport and taxis, to and from Lucca?

by Fullscore

I will be staying in Lucca 4 nights and plan on excursions to viareggio and pisa. Does anyone know of late night services or how much, approximately, taxis cost? or one further, recommend any taxi services?

thanks cc

RE: Late night public transport and taxis, to and from Lucca?

by mccalpin

How late is late night? Maybe you've already looked but that last train leaves Pisa for Lucca at 21:55 and the last train leaves Viareggio for Pisa at 22:11 (based on a sampling of solutions for next Wednesday, times may change). The fare is 2.20 euro, which is going to be hard to beat ;-) See www.trenitalia.com .

It looks like the local intercity bus system is http://www.clapspa.it/enter.htm , but I don't see a bus from Pisa to Lucca after 21:45 or so...but maybe someone knows more...

One of the Pisa taxi cooperatives is CO.TA.PI at http://www.cotapi.it/tarif.html - here you'll see their estimate of 33.56 euro from Pisa to Lucca, but, of course, there are bound to be add-ons like the nighttime supplement, etc. Sounds too cheap ;-)

The website http://www.comune.viareggio.lu.it/trasporti.html shows the fares for taxis in Viareggio...using this and an estimated distance of 28 kilometers, I'm guessing the fare from Viareggio to Lucca may be something like 55.77 euro...wow - makes you wonder about the Pisa to Lucca fare, doesn't it (like maybe it's too low)?

Travel Tips for Lucca

Local commerce

by micas_pt

Wandering around the streets of Lucca you will come across some local commerce, mainly when you stay out of main streets and routes. Some lovely small shops with typical ambiance will provide you a memorable image of Lucca. A couple of elderly ladies talking at the door of this drugstore is a vivid memory of less touristy Lucca that I'm sure I will always remember.

A most common sight in Lucca - a bicycle - is also present on this scene.

City Market at Porta Elisa Stadium

by illudiumqh36 about City Market at Porta Elisa Stadium

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning in the Porta Elisa Stadium there is the city market. Here you can find almost any kind of goods at a cheaopest price than in the old town shops. Obviuosly the quality is not so good. But if you are looking for something cheap to get as a souvenir of your visit it can be the right place.

If you want a good pizza and you have a few time..

by illudiumqh36 about Pizzeria Sbragia

It's one of the oldest and most famous "pizzeria" in town.
You can have a whole pizza or some slices. It's possible to take a table or stay at a desk beside the entrance. The service is very very very quick and the price is right.
Unfortunately (for you, not for the owner!!) sometimes it's easy to find a lot of people waiting for their turn... that should means how good the Sbragia's pizza is. Pizza Margherita

Puccini House and Museum

by deecat

The Giacomo Puccini Museum was inaugurated in 1979, and it belongs to the Puccini Foundation (established in 1973). It is located in the house where Giacomo Puccini, the last of a family of musicians who dominated the musical scene in Lucca, was born. This house is situated at Corte San Lorenzo, 9 in Lucca.

Puccini was born on December 22, 1858. He spent his childhood and early youth in this home before they moved to Milan where he continued his studies. He loved this house in Lucca where he was born, and it was his will that it should remain the property of his family.

The museum has a number of documents and memorabilia concerning his life and work. The piano used by Puccini for the composition of Turnandot is here. It was extremely rewarding to see Puccini's home, his piano, and his music. In my mind's eye, I could picture him sitting at his favorite location creating his beloved pieces all those years ago. Just think, he still lives today!

City Walls

by alucas

The city walls form a complete ring around the old city centre. The current walls date back to the 16th century, but these are in fact the third incarnation.

The original city walls were built in Roman times, and hardly anything remains today. They enclosed an area of about half the current city centre.
