VIsiting Lucca, Tuscany
by philina
Happy New Year at VT!!
Planning to visit Lucca and surrounding area , Tuscany in mid april this year. Is it a good
time for visiting and also need help in recommending
a nice accomodation in Lucca and surrounding area.
Is renting a car a good idea? If so should I arrange
the rental before my departure?
Thank you for your respond.
Philina :)

Rent a car before you go. Canada has the same agencies as the USA for rentals in Europe. If you only know automatic, then make sure you request that as a must. Most cars are stick shift in Italy. The price will be stablized and although expensive, the Insurance to cover the car is worth it in Italy. Do not leave any valuables in sight in the car around Florence, well, anywhere. Parking is easy in Tuscany, as well as the driving. Keep in the far right lane unless passing, then get back into the right lane asap. Rule #1. Rome is the most hectic area for driving. I found the directional signs at the many circular crossroads to be very helpful. You don't state price max. on accommodations. There are many fine villas that have good prices in the Lucca area. Ciao

Rent a car if you want to do some outback site seeing, which is always my favorite. Being out in the country side and in nature is what I look for so that's what I'm going to suggest. Check out the national park in Maremma: http://www.parco-maremma.it/index1.htm
If you're a nature lover it's a real treat.
enjoy!

Travel Tips for Lucca
Rent a bike and explore Lucca!
by Jefie
The historic part of Lucca is so small, there's really no need to have a car to see it all. One option is of course to walk all over the old city, another option is to rent a bicycle and go for a fun ride around the city! There are several little shops from which you can rent bikes in Lucca. We got ours from a place called Cicli Rai, where the price was right and the bikes were in good shape. For the same price (6 Euros per hour if I remember correctly) we could choose between renting two regular bicyles or renting a tandem, something we'd never tried before - so of course we picked the second option! We had so much fun riding in and around Lucca, especially on the nice path that goes all around the old fortifications. I would even put this activity at the very top of my Lucca must-do list! Had I known we were going to rent a bike, I would NOT have been wearing a long skirt on that day! I still found a way to make it work, but I'd recommend wearing something more bicycle-friendly.
To Lucca by plane
by HORSCHECK
Lucca was my last stop on my trip through Mediterranean Europe. I left Italy by plane from Bologna Airport, which is located about 120 km northeast of Lucca. Nearer airports are located in Pisa (20 km) or in Florence (70 km).

Climb Guinigi Tower
by travelrabbit
Virtually smack dab in the middle of Lucca is Guinigi Tower. Providing a stellar view in all directions of the city of Lucca, the climb and the 3 or 4 euro to get there are well worth it.
Some of the signs may not be so obvious in directing you to the tower so when in doubt look for the only tower with trees on top. Here are the hours:
Winter opening: daily 9.00 – 17.30
summer opening: daily 9.00 – 20.00
october opening: daily 10.00 – 18.00
Pucini birthplace home
by BruceDunning
it is a small museum of portraits and sketches. Really not a lot to see inside. The price was 3 euro and at most took 30 minutes to see. Annually there is a famed opera called Festival Puccini, and tickets are coveted. Open 10-1-3-6 daily except for Monday and other times and closed Jan through March. Check before counting on it. It was closed the first time we tried during times it says open.
City Gates
by HORSCHECK
The City Wall of Lucca has 6 gates which are well worth seeing, because of the different architectural styles. Porta San Pietro was erected in 1566 and is located in the south. If you go clockwise from here you will see Porta Sant Anna, Porta San Donato (1629), Porta Santa Maria (1593), Porta San Jacopo and Porta Elisa (1804). Porta Sant Anna and Porta San Jacopo were added much later than the other gates.
